Yathothkari Perumal Temple (Tiruvekkaa), Kanchipuram – Literary Mention

Yathothkari Perumal Temple (Tiruvekkaa), Kanchipuram – Literary Mention
The temple finds mention in Perumpaanatrupadai written by Patanjali. There is a mention about the temple in Silappathikaram (2nd-3rd century CE), Patanjali Mahabaratham and Tolkappiyam (3rd century BCE). The temple is revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the 7th–9th century Vaishnava canon, by Poigai AzhwarPeyalvarBhoothathazhwar and Thirumazhisai Aazhwar. The Azhwars have sung praise on the different forms of Yathothkari Perumal. The temple is classified as a Divyadesam, one of the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the book. Many Acharyas have also written songs on the various forms of God in this Temple.
·        Poigai Alwar - 4 Paasurams
·        Thirumazhisai Alwar - 3 Paasurams
·        Nammaalvar - 1 Paasuram
·        Thirumangai Alwar - 6 Paasuram.
·        Total - 14 Paasurams
Azhvaars:
5 Azhvaars have sung praise of the Lord- Poigai, Pey Azhvaar, Nammazhwar, Thirumangai Azhvaar and Thirumazhisai Azhvaar. This is also the birth place of Poigai Azhvaar.
In early days of Vaishnavism, this temple was referred to as the Lord representing ‘Sleeping Posture’ as can be seen from the songs of the Azhvaars.
இசைந்த வரவமும் வேர்புங்கடலும்
பசைதனமுது படப்ப
அசைந்து கடைந்த வருத்தமோ

வேக்காவில் கிடந்திருந்து நின்றது மங்கு - பேயாழ்வார்
Peyazhwar Hymns:

Such is the fame of the Lord here that Pey Azhvaar in this Paasuram says 'One need not stand atop mountains to penance. Neither does one need to be stick our neck into ice cold deep water nor in the midst of five fires to penance. It is just enough if we worship Sonna Vannam Seitha Perumal at Thiruvekka with flowers and a sincere heart. And we will liberate from all our sins.'
