Vedapureeswarar Temple, Thiruverkadu, Thiruvallur

Vedapureeswarar Temple, Thiruverkadu, Thiruvallur
Vedapureeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Thiruverkadu, a Municipality in Tiruvallur district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Shiva is worshipped as Vedapureeswarar / Verkaateesar, and is represented by the lingam. His consort Parvati is depicted as Balambigai / Verkanni Amman. The temple complex covers two acres and it houses two gateway towers known as gopurams, each facing the Vedapureeswarar and Balambigai shrine. The temple has a number of shrines, with those of Vedapureeswarar and his consort Balambigai being the most prominent.

The original complex is believed to have been built by Cholas, while the present masonry structure was built during the Nayak during the 16th century. In modern times, the temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamilnadu. The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and four yearly festivals on its calendar. The Brahmotsavam festival is celebrated during the day of the Magam (February - March) is the most prominent festival.

It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Sundarar. The temple also finds mention in Tirumular's Thirumanthiram, Arunagirinathar's Thiruppugazh and Manikkavacakar's Tiruvasagam. This is the 23rd Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam in Thondai Nadu. Tiruverkadu is known more for the Karumariamman temple which attracts thousands of pilgrims.

Thiruverkadu is also the birth place of the one of 63 Nayanmars, “Sri Moorka Nayanar”. This Village was also known as Vada Vedaranyam since Lords here appear in their wedding posture, similar to the one at Vedaranyam in the Nagapattinam District. It is considered to be of significance to visit the shrines of Balambikai here, Vadivudaiamman in Thiruvotriyur and Jagadambika in Padi, on the same day.
