Karaikandeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Kuruvimalai Village in Polur Taluk in Thiruvannamalai District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Karaikandeswarar and Mother is called as Periyanayagi Amman / Brahannayaki. This Temple is considered as one the Saptha Kailaya Sthalams established and worshipped by Lord Muruga on the northern bank of river Cheyyar. Like the other Karaikandeswarar Temple, here also Cheyyar river flows towards North and hence this is considered equivalent to Kasi.

The Temple
There are two Temples in this Village combinedly called as Karaikandeswarar Temple. First Temple is called as Aadhi Karai Kandeswarar Temple and second as Karai Kandeswarar Temple. Both the Temples are located within 300 meters distance. For Adhi Karaikandeswarar Temple, Presiding Deity is called as Adhi Karaikandeswarar and Mother is called as Periyanayagi Amman / Brahannayaki. For Karai Kandeswarar Temple, Presiding Deity is called as Karaikandeswarar and Mother is called as Periyanayagi Amman / Brahannayaki.

The Temple is located at about 2.5 Kms from Kalasapakkam Bus Stand, 3 Kms from Kalasapakkam, 6.5 Kms from Polur, 8.5 Kms from Agaram Sibbandi Railway Station, 28 Kms from Thiruvannamalai, 30 Kms from Thiruvannamalai Railway Station, 160 Kms from Chennai Airport and 174 Kms from Chennai. Regular Buses are available from all parts of Thiruvannamalai and neighboring districts to Kalasapakkam. The Temple is conveniently connected to Kalasapakkam Bus Stand.

Karaikandeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Poondi Village in Kalasapakkam Taluk in Thiruvannamalai District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Karaikandeswarar and Mother is called as Periyanayagi Amman / Brahannayaki. This Temple is considered as one the Saptha Kailaya Sthalams established and worshipped by Lord Muruga on the northern bank of river Cheyyar. Like the other Karaikandeswarar Temple, here also Cheyyar river flows towards North and hence this is considered equivalent to Kasi. Poondi is also famous for the Jeeva Samadhi of Poondi Mahan. The Temple belongs to Chola period.

The Temple
Presiding Deity is called as Karaikandeswarar. Dwajasthambam and Nandhi can be found facing the sanctum. Mother is called as Periyanayagi Amman / Brahannayaki. Mother is housed in a separate shrine. There are shrines for Bala Vinayaga, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingodhbava, Bhairava, Durga, Venugopala with his consort Rukmini, Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, Balasubramanya Swamy and Nataraja in the Temple premises. There is an Agastheeswarar Temple nearby. There is a practice followed by devotees here, after worshipping Agastheeswarar only, Karaikandeswarar will be worshipped.

The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Elathur, 6 Kms from Villvarani, 3 Kms from Kalasapakkam, 3.5 Kms from Kalasapakkam Bus Stand, 9 Kms from Agaram Sibbandi Railway Station, 12 Kms from Polur, 32 Kms from Thiruvannamalai, 31 Kms from Thiruvannamalai Railway Station, 166 Kms from Chennai Airport and 180 Kms from Chennai. The temple can be reached either from Polur – Thiruvannamalai Road or from Kalasapakkam Vilvarani Road. While coming from Polur on the Chengam road, around 650 meters after Vilvarani Murugan temple, you have to take a left turn and travel further for another 5 Kms to reach the Temple.

History
The Temple has been renovated by Cholas and Vijayanagara Kings in the ancient past.



The Temple
The Temple is having a south facing entrance arch with stucco image of Rishabaroodar with Nandhis on both side. Presiding Deity is called as Karaikandeswarar. Lord is facing north. Nandhi is found in the prakaram facing the sanctum through a window. There are idols of Vinayaga and Bhairava at the entrance of the sanctum.



Ganesha, Bhairava, Lingodhbava, Brahma and Durga are the niche idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar is situated in his usual location. There is a shrine for Dhakshinamoorthy on the eastern side from the sanctum. Natarajar Arudhra Mandapam is situated inside the four pillared Mahamandapam.



Mother is called as Periyanayagi Amman / Brahannayaki. Mother is housed in separate east facing shrine. She is sitting posture resting left hand on her thighs and holding Kuvalai Flower on her right hand. There are shrines for Vinayaga and Lord Muruga with his consorts Valli and Deivanai in the temple premises.

The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Villvarani, 7 Kms from Poondi, 9 Kms from Kalasapakkam, 12 Kms from Agaram Sibbandi Railway Station, 16 Kms from Polur, 34 Kms from Thiruvannamalai, 29 Kms from Thiruvannamalai Railway Station, 169 Kms from Chennai Airport and 188 Kms from Chennai. The temple can be reached either from Polur – Chengam road or from Kalasapakkam Vilvarani Road. While coming from Polur on the Chengam road, around 650 meters after Vilvarani Murugan temple, you have to take a left turn and travel further for another 1.5 kms to reach the temple. While coming from Kalasapakkam – Poondi, after Poondi, Priyampattu and Kannikoil, just before a small bridge on a water channel, you have to take a left village road and travel further for another 2 Kms.

Karaikandeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thenmathimangalam Village in Kalasapakkam Taluk in Thiruvannamalai District of Tamilnadu. Thenmathimangalam is also called as Then Mahadeva Mangalam. Presiding Deity is called as Karaikandeswarar and Mother is called as Periyanayagi Amman / Brahannayaki. This Temple is considered as one the Saptha Kailaya Sthalams established and worshipped by Lord Muruga on the northern bank of river Cheyyar. Like the other Karaikandeswarar Temple, here also Cheyyar river flows towards North and hence this is considered equivalent to Kasi.

History
The Temple is believed to build by Cholas during 10th Century. Later local chieftains and Samburvaraya Kings had done lot of renovations to this Temple.




The Temple
The Temple covers an area of about 2 acres with two prakarams. Nandhi is housed in 12 pillared mandapam after the main entrance. 11th Century Pond can be found to north east of Nandhi Mandapam in the first prakaram. Balipeedam and Dwajasthambam are found facing sanctum in the second prakaram. Presiding Deity is called as Karaikandeswarar. Lord is facing east. Mother is called as Periyanayagi Amman / Brahannayaki. Mother is housed in a separate shrine.




There are shrines of Arthanareeswarar, Kasi Viswanathar, Kasi Visalakshi, Nandanar, Saptha kannigais and Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai in the temple premises. Since this is Mid Karaikandeswarar Sthalam, remaining three Karaikandeswarar Lingams can be found in the temple premises. The temple has a mandapam facility to stay and this could be a convenient point from where all the 14 temples can be visited easily.
