Sekkizhar Mani Mandapam, Kundrathur, Chennai


Sekkizhar Mani Mandapam is a memorial dedicated to famous Tamil Scholar and Poet Sekkizhar located at Kundrathur, a suburb of Chennai in the Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu.  He lived in the 12th century CE during the period of Kulothunga Chola II. He was the author of Periya Puranam, which talks about the lives and greatness of 63 Nayanmars. The temple of Nageswarar in Kundrathur was built by Sekkizhar.



In memory of this great poet, a big mandapam (hall) was constructed near Nageswarar Temple in the recent past. This mandapam is called as Sekkizhar Mani Mandapam. This big hall has a statue of Sekkizhar in the middle. There is a Dyana mandapam situated inside the Mani Mandapam. This hall is very well maintained and looks clean and neat. The open space outside the hall has beautiful gardens and the villagers visit this site during the evening time to enjoy the pleasant weather and breeze.

Subramanya Swamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan located at Kundrathur, a suburb of Chennai in the Kanchipuram District of Tamil NaduThe Temple is famously called as Kundrathur Murugan Temple. This is the only Lord Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu where lord faces north direction facing Thanigai. The temple also has mention in the Thirupugazh hymns of saint Arunagiri Nathar.





Legends
After conquering the demons in Thiruporur, Lord Muruga proceeded to Thiruthani in a happy mood. Lord Subramaniar stayed in this hill on an auspicious day during his travel. He installed a Shiva Linga and performed Shiva Puja here with deep meditation.  This temple was later built by Kulothunga Chozha.  Lord Shiva, worshipped by Muruga graces in the name of Kandaleeswarar in a separate shrine. This place is also known as ‘South Thanigai’ since Lord Subramaniar is sitting in the direction of north facing Thanigai.





History
The temple was built by Kulothunga Chola II. Tamil Poet Sekkizhar was born here and his birthplace was made into a Temple. He was the chief minister of Kulothunga Chozha II alias Anabaya. He withdrew from the ministry and wrote Periyapuranam. His young brother Palaravayar dug a water tank near his residence, which is now called Palaravayar Kulam.

Festivals
Vaikasi Visakam in May-June, Padi Utsavam in Vaikasi, Skanda Sashti in October-November, Tirukarthikai in November-December, Thai Poosam in January-February, Tamil New Year, Chithirai Sasti, Aadi Krthigai, English new year, Thai Pongal, Thai kiruthigai and Panguni Uthiram in March-April are the festivals celebrated in the temple. During the eight-day Skanda Sashti festival, the event of destroying demon Surapadma takes place on the sixth day while Valli wedding festival takes place on the seventh day and that with Deivanai is celebrated on the eighth day. The temple celebrates karthigai deepam in a grand manner and deepam will be lit on the hill temple. Karthikai asterism each month is considered sacred here.
Singers
The temple has mention in the Thirupugazh hymns of saint Arunagiriar.
Prayers
Majority of the devotees pray for removal of obstacles in marriage proposals. Devotees perform abishekams and wedding festival for Lord Muruga, offer vastras. There is huge sacred fig tree at this temple.  Devotees who do not have children will visit here and tie a cradle at this tree. Once their wish comes true (once they have children) they will again come back to the temple and give offerings of fruits or sugar to the equal weight of baby. Even if the children are not with good health devotees worship here for better health. The abishek Vibhuthi (holy ash) is offered as Prasad to the devotees.
