Ooty – General Information

Ooty – General Information

Ooty is the colloquial name for Ootacamund or Udhagamandalam, a destination in the state of Tamil Nadu in the south of India. Dubbed the 'Queen of Hill Stations' by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Ooty covers an area of over 36 square kilometres and is home to the Dodabetta peak, the highest point in South India.
Udhagamandalam (Ooty), the "Queen of hill stations" is the capital of Nilgiri district. It is one of the Best tourist resorts and is called as "Blue Mountains". It is a land of dreams and a picturesque hill station. It is situated at a distance of 105 km away from Coimbatore. The height of the hills in the Nilgiri range varies between 2280 and 2290 meters, the highest peak being Dodabetta at a height of 2623 meters.
This famous hill station is at the junction of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, three southern states of India. British founded this hill resort which seemed them as their summer headquarters. Before that time, the area was inhabited by Todas. These tribal people still inhabit the area, but only around 3000 remain.
Ooty's fame and popularity lies squarely in its natural beauty, which encompasses stunning landscapes, lush green forest reserves and sprawling national parks. Few visitors come expecting any more than this and few leave the destination without agreeing 100 per cent that this is truly one of the most aesthetically pleasing destinations in the country in terms of natural scenery.
The Nilgiris district in which Ooty is located is home to a large selection of tea plantations, making this officially 'tea country' and the ideal place to sample some local brews as well as check out the massive and quite awesome plots on which tea plants stretch for as far as the eye can see.
While Ooty does not offer a vast selection of cultural attractions, other destinations in the Nilgiris district are home to temples and mosques of interest, giving those visitors who are prepared to travel a little the chance to see something other than just rolling mountains and flora-rich landscapes.
Though Ooty attracts plenty of visitors, it is far from being commercially spoilt and still retains its unique hill station charm and pleasant natural ambience. Accommodation is plentiful but tastefully designed and carefully positioned so as not to impinge on the very aspect of the town that attracts visitors.
Getting to this scenic destination is a little challenging but not terribly so; necessitating for most visitors, an international flight to a large airport such as Chennai, Mumbai or Bangalore, followed by a connecting flight to Coimbatore and then a train journey to Ooty. Alternatively, visitors already in the country can take the bus or the train from a large number of Indian cities.
Ooty is ideal as a weekend or short break destination as part of a travelling holiday, offering the chance to spend a relaxing few days and presenting a genuinely soothing alternative to the hectic spectacle that many large Indian cities are witness to.
It was once a getaway from the steamy summers of the plains for the British elite of the Madras Presidency is now a hill station that caters to weekend holidaymakers from all over the South of India and honeymooners from across the country.

Climate
The weather of Ooty is generally pleasant throughout the year. Though each season brings in various changes in its mood but all are enough hospitable to the tourists. Ooty is among those few hill stations that can be easily visited at any time of the year.
Various seasons in Ooty brings out the different aspects of the beauty of this hill station. While the summers are charming and colorful, the winters in Ooty are thrilling. It is among the relatively cool places in South India.
Being located at quite a high altitude the climate of Ooty remains cool and temperate almost all through the year. During the summers temperature ranges from 10 degrees to 25 degrees. During the winter months temperature ranges between 5 degree and 21 degrees centigrade.
The spring season is the time when Ooty is most colorful. The surrounding hills bustles with the varied hues of different regional flowers.
During the rainy season the hill station blooms with lush greenery all around. During this time the trek routes are generally closed but the rainy season of Ooty offers a charm that no other season does.

Though the pleasing weather of Ooty has made it a place favorable for visiting at any time of the year, but the most suitable times to visit this hill station are the months of February and March and the time between October and November.
Ooty features a subtropical highland climate (Cwb) under Köppen climate classification. Despite its location in the tropics, in stark contrast with most of South India, Ooty generally features pleasantly mild conditions throughout the year. However, nighttime in the months of January and February is typically chilly. Generally, the town appears to be eternally stuck in the spring season. Temperatures are relatively consistent throughout the year; with average high temperatures ranging from about 17–20 °C (63–68 °F) and average low temperatures between approximately 5–12 °C (41–54 °F). The highest temperature ever recorded in Ooty was 25 °C (77 °F), which by South Asian standards is uncharacteristically low for an all-time record high temperature. The lowest temperature was −2 °C (28 °F). The city sees on average about 1,250 mm (49 in) of precipitation annually, with a marked drier season from December through March.
Demography
As of the census of India 2001, Udhagamandalam had a population of 93,987 comprising 46,999 males and 46,988 females, making the sex ratio (number of females per thousand males) of the town to 1,000. A total of 9,603 people were under six years of age and the child sex ratio (number of females per thousand males under six years of age) stood at 995. The town had an average literacy of 86.78%, higher than the national average of 59.5%.
A total of 26,761 comprising 31.71% of the population belonged to Scheduled Castes (SC) and 394 comprising 0.47% of the population belonged to Scheduled tribes (ST). There were total of 21,614 households in the town. As of 2001, Udhagamandalam had a total of 32,561 main workers: 657 cultivators, 4,991 agricultural labourers, 202 in house hold industries and 26,711 other workers. There were a total of 1,110 marginal workers: 16 marginal cultivators, 444 marginal agricultural labourers, 27 marginal workers in household industries and 623 other marginal workers. Tamil is the lingua franca of Udhagamandalam. Languages native to the Nilgiris like Badaga and Paniya are also spoken by the tribes. Due to its proximity to the neighbouring states and it being a popular tourist spot, EnglishKannada and Malayalam are also spoken and understood to an extent.
Governance and politics
Ooty is the district headquarters of the Nilgiris district. The Ootacamund assembly constituency is part of the Nilgiris Lok Sabha constituency.
Economy
Contrary to the thought that much of the local economy is now dominated by tourism, Ooty is still a supply base and market town for the surrounding area which is still largely dependent on agriculture, notably the cultivation of "English Vegetables" and "English Fruits" grown locally. This primarily consists of potato, carrot, cabbage and cauliflower and the fruits being peaches, plums, pears and strawberries.
There is a daily wholesale auction of these products at the Ooty Municipal Market, which is one of the largest retail markets in India. Dairy farming has long been present in the area and there is a cooperative dairy in Ooty manufacturing cheese and skimmed milk powder. As a result of the local agricultural industry, certain research institutes are based in Ooty. These include a soil conservation center, livestock farm and a potato research farm. Efforts are being made to diversify the range of local crops with Floriculture and Sericulture being introduced in the local area, as well as the cultivation of mushrooms.
Hindustan Photo Films, the film manufacturer, is also a major industry in Ooty. This is located on the outskirts of the town at Indu Nagar. Human Biologicals Institute, which manufactures Human Rabies Vaccine, is present in Ooty near Pudumand. Other manufacturing industries are located in the outskirts of Ooty. The most significant of these are in Ketti (manufacture of needles); Aruvankadu (manufacture of cordite) and Coonoor (manufacture of rabies vaccine). Cottage industries in the area include chocolate, pickle manufacture and carpentry. Homemade chocolates are popular among the tourists and the locals.
Though the local area is known for tea cultivation, this crop is no longer grown nor processed in Ooty. Tea is more economically grown at slightly lower altitude and hence Coonoor and Kotagiri are local centres of tea cultivation and processing.
Education
Boarding schools have been a feature of Ooty since the days of the British Raj. They offer a significant contribution to the local economy. The facilities and standards of education are considered amongst the highest in India, and so these schools are popular amongst the elite of India and some of the neighbouring countries.

Sports
The England cricket captain Colin Cowdrey was born in Ootacamund on his father's tea plantation, and lived there until he left for school in England in 1938.
The diverse landscape of Ooty offers an opportunity to explore number of adventure sports and recreational activities, including hang gliding. Located around 20 km from Ooty, Kalahatty in the mountain ranges of Nilgiris is a world-class site for hang gliding. This adventure sport involves hanging suspended by a harness from a large type of kite that is known as hang glider. Kalahatty has a launch area that can be reached by a jeep. From March to May, hang gliding training courses are organised in Ooty.
Ooty Golf Course is located in Ooty town. The golf course is set at an altitude of 7600 feet. It is owned by the Gymkhana club in Ooty. The course extends over 193.56 acres and comprises 18 holes.
Eco-friendliness
A lot of actions have been carried out in the past few years to maintain the precarious ecosystem that is present in this part of the region. Plastic carry bags have been banned for years now. Residents, as well as shopkeepers, prefer to use recycled paper or cloth bags for normal use.

Important Peaks in the Nilgiris
Ø  Dodabetta: (11024' N, 76047' E - height: 2636 mts)
The eminent range of heights which runs north-south in the middle of the plateau, reaches its highest point at Dodabetta at about 4 km east south east from Udhagamandalam. Hecuba (2375 metres) Kattadadu (2418 metres) and Kulkudi (2439 metres) are the three closely linked heights in west of Dodabetta range and nearby Udhagamandalam. In the Nilgiris plateau Dodabetta is highest peak of the Nilgiris district remarkable for the flattened curve of its summit. Thick woods decorate the hollows of its slopes. Slightly stunted, rhododendron trees, in the midst of thick coarse grass, flowering sub-alpine shrubs and herbs are common sight even very near to the peak.
Ø  Snowdon: (11026' N, 76046' E - Height: 2530 Mts).
This is the northern eminence of the range, which has Dodabetta in south. The Club Hill (2448 metres) and the Elk Hill (2466 metres) are other two significant elevations in this range. Snowdon, Club Hill and Elk Hill along with the Dodabetta, form among themselves the impressive Udhagamandalam Valley.
Ø  Devashola: (Height 2261 Mts)
Notable for its blue gum trees, the Devashola stands majestically in south of Dodabetta range
Ø  Kulakombai: (Height 1707 Mts)
To the east of the Devashola, the Kulakombai hill attracts one's attention. The height of the Bhavani Valley and the Lambton's peak range of the Coimbatore district stretch before us from here.
Ø  Hullikal Durg: (11019'N, 76053'E)
Huli means "Tiger" in Canarese. So, Hulikal Durg means Tiger Rock Fort. The Sanskrit name of his place is Bakasura Parvata situated at 3 km. south east of Coonoor. Pitch tropical forest flourishes at the base of this hill, while the valleys support only green foliage.
Ø  Coonoor Betta: (Height 2101 Mts)
This is also called Teneriffe. Standing on the northern side of the gorge, accommodating the railway track to Coonoor.
Ø  Rallia Hill: (11025' N, 76053'E - Height: 2248 Mts.)
In the midst of reserved forest, almost equidistant from Udhagamandalam and Kotagiri.
Ø  Dimhatti Hill: (11026'N, 77001'E - height: 1788 Mts)
This peak is above the Gajalahatti pass, which provided a short cut from Mysore to the caranatic plains and was, therefore, of much strategic importance in eighteenth century. This peak, dedicated to the Deity Rangaswamy is considered holy by the people of the surrounding villages.
Ø  Peaks at Mukurthi NP
In the Nilgiri Plateau the Kundah range of hills serves like a ridge on the south-western side. With the elevation greater than the general level of the plateau, the ranges also possess a few peaks, closely approximating the height of Dodabetta.
The Avalanche hill of this range has twin-peaks of the Kudikkadu (2590 metres) and the Kolari (2625 Metres)
Ø  Derbetta or Bear Hill (Height: 2531 meters) Kolibetta (2494 metres)
Another height, deserving notice here is the Derbetta or Bear Hill (2531 meters) and Kolibetta (2494 metres). The peaks south of the Ouchterlony valley are just the continuation of the Kundah range.
The Pichalbetta (2544 Meters) The Nilgiri Peak (2474 metres) and The Mukurthi Peak (2554 Meters) are the important heights of this area. The hills of the Wynad are generally poor in relation to other height of the district; yet they do impress the traveler because of the generally uniform level of this area. The highest peak in the part of the district is the Maruppanmudi hill (11031' N, 76027' E) which is 10 km. west north from Gudalur. Its height is 1528 meters. The other height deserving notices are the Needle Rock, the Hadiabetta Hill (1155 meters) and the Glulur hill (1148 metres)
Ø  Chinna Dodabetta (11028' N, 760 45' E - Height: 2392Mts.)
This is about five km. south of Udhagamandalam.
Ø  Konabetta: (11030' N, 76046' E - Height: 2066 Mts)
This is about 5 km, north-northeast of Udhagamandalam. This is also called Sigur Peak.
Ø  Koodal Betta: (11028'N, 76050'E - Height: 2183 Mts.)
The name of this hill means 'Echoing rock' this is about 13 km from North-east of Udhagamandalam.
