Ranganathaswamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Karamadai Town near Mettupalayam in Mettupalayam Taluk in Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple situated on the foothills of Nilgiris and the backdrop of hills adds to the beauty of this temple.  The temple is believed to be the second oldest temple in Coimbatore District and the foremost Vishnu temple in Kongu Nadu. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

History

The temple is originally believed to have been built during the Chola Empire during the 10th – 11th centuries. Saint Ramanuja (1017–1137 CE), the expounder of Vaishnadvaita philosophy is believed to have visited the temple on his way to Melkote from Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple. Thirumalai Nayak (1623-59 CE) expanded the temple during his regime and built the walls and halls in the temple. Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar (1940–1950) built a set of other halls in the temple. The northern temple tower was built during 1944, while the seven-tiered 80 ft (24 m) Eastern tower was built during 2013. Some of the old halls were also renovated during 2013.

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 6.00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. On saturdays, the temple remains open from 6.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. and 3.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Connectivity

The Temple is located at about 500 meters from Karamadai Bus Stand, 500 meters from Karamadai Railway Station, 8 Kms from Mettupalayam, 8 Kms from Mettupalayam Railway Station, 28 Kms from Coimbatore, 30 Kms from Coimbatore Junction Railway Station and 30 Kms from Coimbatore Airport. Karamadai is situated on Coimbatore to Mettupalayam Route. Buses plying to Mettupalayam and Ooty stops at Karamadai. Devotees can take buses 102A, 102C, 102 & 102B from Coimbatore and buses 13, 32 & 4 from Mettupalayam to reach Karamadai.
