Moovar Koil, Kodumbalur, Pudukottai

Moovar Koil is a Hindu Temple Complex dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Kodumbalur Village in Illupur Taluk in Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple complex has three major shrines. Of the three shrines, the central and the southern shrines have survived while the northern shrine has gone completely out of existence except the plinth. This temple is considered as Thirupugazh Sthalam as Saint Arunagirinathar had praised about this place in his Thirupugazh Hymns. The temple is maintained and administered by the Archaeological Survey of India as a ticketed monument.





Legends

As per legend, Appar, Sundarar and Sambandar built one shrine each in this place. Another legend states that the three crowned kings of ancient Thamizhakam namely Chera, Chola and Pandyas built one shrine each. Another belief is that these shrines were intended to house Hindu trinity namely Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, one in each. Hence, these temples are collected came to be called as Moovar Koil (three temples).

Temple Opening Time

The Temple remains open from 9.00 in the mornings till 5.30 pm in the evenings.

Entry Fees

Citizens of India and visitors of SAARC (Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Maldives and Afghanistan) and BIMSTEC Countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Myanmar) - Rs. 5 per head.

Others: US $ 2 or Indian Rs. 100/- per head (Free entry to children up to 15 years)

Connectivity

The Temple is located at about 10 Kms from Viralimalai, 13 Kms from Illupur, 14 Kms from Manapparai, 14 Kms from Manapparai Bus Stand, 15 Kms from Manapparai Railway Station, 38 Kms from Pudukottai, 42 Kms from Trichy Airport, 44 Kms from Trichy and 99 Kms from Madurai. The temple is situated at about 3 Kms from Trichy to Madurai highway (NH 38). Frequent Buses are available from Manapparai and Viralimalai.
