History
This temple is believed to be built by Karikala Chola, famous Sangam era Chola Emperor, who built the famous Kallanai Dam. The temple was later renovated by Later Cholas and Pandyas. The main shrine of the temple was converted into granite structure during 12th Century AD by Rajaraja Chola II or Kulothunga Chola III. The earliest inscription in the central shrine is dated to 40th regnal year of Kulottunga Chola III (1218-19). The temple may have been built either in the reign of Rajaraja Chola II or early in the reign of Kulottunga III. The reign of Rajaraja Chola II is considered to be more probable judging from the architectural features.
