Chakravageswarar Temple, Chakkarapalli, Thanjavur
Chakravageswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Chakkarapalli in Papanasam Taluk in Thanjavur District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Chakravageswarar and Mother is called as Devanayaki. In general terms among the people, the place is known as Ayyampettai.  As there are many places under this name, this is specifically called Thanjavur Ayyampettai. This temple is one of the 7 shrines associated with the Saptha Matrikas (Madhas / Mangais) around Ayyampettai / Pasupathi Koil area in the Thanjavur – Papanasam (Kumbakonam) route. This Temple is associated with Mother Abhirami.



The temple is incarnated by the hymns of Thevaram, the 7th century Tamil literature and is classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. This is the 134th Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 17th sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Tirugnanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. Lord Muruga of this Temple is praised in Thirupugazh by Saint Arunagirinathar. The temple is under the control of Swamimalai Murugan Temple.

Lord Vishnu obtained his discus by worshipping Lord Shiva here:
Vishnu obtained his discus (Chakram) after worshipping Shiva here, hence the name Chakkarapalli. This legend is similar to that at Tirumalper near Kanchipuram and to that at Thiruveezhimizhalai near Tiruvirkudi Veerattam.

Etymology:
Lord Vishnu was blessed with the discus, and the bird Chakravaha Paravai worshipped Lord Shiva in the temple. Hence the name Chakkarapalli.

Temple Opening Time
The Temple remains open from 08.00 a.m. to 09.00 a.m. and 05.00 p.m. to 07.00 p.m.
Festivals
Panguni Uthiram (March-April), Shivarathri in Vaikasi (May-June), Mahasivarathri in February-March, Aipasi Annabishekam in October-November and Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January are the festivals celebrated in the temple. This Temple is one of the seven places forming seven Holy Kshetras in and around Pasupathi Koil where the annual Saptha Sthanam festival is held in the month of Panguni. The Deities from the main temple Chakkarapalli are taken in a procession in very huge “kannadippallakkoo” weighing more than 2000 Kgs by bearers on bare foot over more than 40 Kms in two days nonstop except for few hours halt at Kudamurutti river sands for the fireworks show at 4 am.

Saint Gnanasambandhar praises this shrine in his Thevaram hymns in the following lines. Chakkarapalli is graced by the Lord with his lightning bright long hair adored with Kondrai flowers and Moon and the golden snake. It is a prosperous land of scholars of the four Vedas revered universally.
