Sivanandeswarar Temple, Tirupandurai, Thanjavur

Sivanandeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Tirupandurai near Nachiyar Koil in Kumbakonam Taluk in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu, India. Presiding Deity is called as Sivanandeswarar / Pranaveswarar and Mother is called as Mangalambigai / Malaiarasi. The Temple is situated on the southern banks of Arasalaru River.


This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams (Shiva Sthalams) glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirugnanasambandar. This Temple is considered as one of the 181st Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 64th Shiva Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Naadu.

History

It is believed that Karikala Chola converted the brick structure to granite structure. Lord Shiva is called as Penu Perunthurai Mahadevar and Mother is called as Malaiyarasi Amman as per the inscription available in this Temple. The place was called as Penu Perundurai in ancient times.

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.

Festivals

The Temple celebrates Lord Muruga related festivals as Thai Poosam in January-February; Vaikasi Visakam in May-June; Aipasi Skanda Sashti in October-November and Tirukarthikai in November-December.

Prayers

Those unable to speak, suffering from stammering bathe in the Mangala Theertham and perform abishek to Lord Muruga with honey for 48 days to gain speech skills. Devotees do the usual abishek and aaradhanas to Lord and Mother and offer vastras.

The Temple is located at about 2 Kms from Nachiyar Koil, 11 Kms from Kumbakonam Railway Station, 12 Kms from Kumbakonam Bus Stand, 12 Kms from Kumbakonam, 49 Kms from Thanjavur and 109 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is situated on Kumbakonam – Nachiyar Koil – Poonthottam Road. The Temple is located at about 2 Kms after crossing Nachiyar Koil.
