Panchavan Maadevi Pallippadai Temple, Ramanathan Koil, Thanjavur

Panchavan Maadevi Pallippadai Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Ramanathan Koil near Patteeswaram in Kumbakonam Taluk in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. The Temple is also called as Panchavan Maadevi Iswaram. It is a unique temple built in memory of one of the greatest Chola Emperor Rajendra Chola I’s Step Mother Panchavan Maadevi. This temple shows Rajendra Chola’s unconditional affection and love towards his step mother. This temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with three tiered Rajagopuram. The temple is enclosed within brick compound wall. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Maha Mandapam, Artha mandapam and Sanctum. Two beautifully carved images of the Chandrasekara forms of Lord Siva can be seen at the entrance of Maha Mandapam. Dvarapalas can be found at the entrance of the Sanctum.


There is a Nandi in Artha Mandapam facing the sanctum. Presiding Deity is called as Ramalinga Swamy / Ramanatha Swamy / Panchavan Mahadevi Iswarathu Mahadevar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Vinayaga, Bikshadana, Gangadhara, Arthanareeswarar, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls.


It is said that the idols of Dakshinamoorthy and Bikshadana belonged to Nandivarma Pallava II (710 AD – 715 AD). Mother is called as Vimala Nayagi / Mangala Nayagi. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated in Maha Mandapam. There are idols of Surya, Murugan and Vinayaga in the Maha Mandapam.

The Temple is located at about 1 Km from Patteeswaram, 3 Kms from Swamimalai Railway Station, 4 Kms from Darasuram Railway Station, 5 Kms from Darasuram, 5 Kms from Swamimalai, 8 Kms from Kumbakonam, 9 Kms from Kumbakonam Bus Stand, 9 Kms from Kumbakonam Railway Station, 35 Kms from Thanjavur and 90 Kms from Trichy Airport. Patteeswaram is situated on the Kumbakonam to Aavoor route. Town buses 8, 11, 25, 35, 61, 62 & 67 are available from Kumbakonam to reach this temple. Also, mini buses are available from Kumbakonam, Swamimalai and Darasuram. The Temple is situated on Patteeswaram to Papanasam Route.
