Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam – Other Festivals
Ranganathar-Surathani Kalyanam:
The
kalyanam or wedding of Lord Ranganathar with Surathani is performed every year
with much gaiety and fervor.
Rathothsavam:
The
annual temple chariot festival called Rathotsavam is celebrated during the
Tamil month of Thai (January–February) and the processional Utsavar deity is
taken round the temple in the temple car.
Theppam (Float) Festival:
In Masi Theppa
Thiruvizha (10 day boat festival) attracts large crowd. The temple is always in
festive mood almost all days of the year with huge inflow of devotees from
various parts of the state and the country including foreigners.
Aadi Perukku:
Traditional
Tamil Aadi Perukku Utsavam (the day is generally considered auspicious for
sowing) is celebrated in the temple on the 48th day of the Jestabishekam
performed to Lord Ranganatha on the Jeshta star day in the month of
Aani-June-July.
In some
Tamil years, the festival is celebrated in Aadi ((July-August) 18th or
28th day. In the current year 2011, it is proposed to be
celebrated on Aadi 28. On the day, Lord Graces from the Amma
(mother) Mandapam.
On
behalf of the Lord, silk sari, bangles, kumkum, betels and auspicious articles
are offered to Mother Cauvery as gift. All these articles are
carried on an elephant into the river and let in the flow.
