Kailasanathar Temple, Uthiramerur, Kanchipuram

Kailasanathar Temple, Uthiramerur, Kanchipuram
Kailasanathar Temple at Uthiramerur in Tamil Nadu is believed to be more than 1,250 years old. The temple dedicated to Shiva had developed serious cracks and was restored by REACH Foundation. Rural Education and Conservation of Heritage (REACH) is involved in the restoration and preservation of the sculptural heritage of India. They have successfully restored numerous ancient temples in Tamilnadu.

The Kumbhabhishekam was performed recently after the renovation done by REACH foundation. Iraivan is Sri Kailasa Nathar & Iraivi is Sri Kamakshi Amman. From two inscription it was observed that if anybody obstruct the normal functioning of the temple poojas and lighting of lamps received through gifts (By way of gold, Land, bullock) to temple, it will be equivalent to killing their father and mother and Killing a cow on the banks of Gangai river.

Also there was a measurement marked at the base of the temple in two lengths of each 11 feet.  Vijayanagara Kings Royal emblems of Kattarai and Sun had been inscribed on the pillars. The temple belongs to Nandivarman Pallava period. The temple was constructed with bricks during Pallavas and latter built with stone during Chozhas.

Moolavar is little large and there is passage called Saantharam, through this passage we can circumambulate Lord Shiva. Also technically the two walls hold the entire weight of Moolavar Vimanam.

A Sudhai Sirpam of Somaskandar was constructed behind Moolavar which is unique only in this temple. There is no Dwajasthambam and Rajagopuram. There is no moortham installed in the koshtam niches.

Uthiramerur is well connected by bus from Tambaram. Tambaram to Uthiramerur is about one and half hours journey. Plenty of buses are there – roughly every half an hour. After Mamandur on the GST, the bus takes a right turn. Once we leave the GST, it is pristine country side with occasional granite factories.

The town is very busy and has very good bus facilities to Kanchipuram and Chengalpet. Uthiramerur can be reached either from Chengalpet side from the NH 45. It is about 18 kms from Bukathurai. Buses are available from Chennai, Kanchipuram.
