Thirupuliyangudi Perumal Temple (Kaaichina Vendha Perumal Temple), Thoothukudi – The Temple

Thirupuliyangudi Perumal Temple (Kaaichina Vendha Perumal Temple), Thoothukudi – The Temple
The temple has an imposing image of Lord Vishnu, a lotus stalk from the navel of the image emanates the image of Brahma. The feet of the deity can be viewed through the passage. The temple has two prakarams (closed precincts of a temple).

One can see the feet of Lord Bhoomi Paalar from a wall opening while one goes around the temple. He keeps the ‘measuring can’ as his pillow. His Spouses Malarmagal Naachiyar and Poomagal Naachiyar do not have separate shrines. But, the icons are huge in size; such big-sized icons are not seen in any other temple.

The lotus-stem from the navel of the Prime deity reaches the lotus-carving on the wall of the sanctum sanctorum, where seated is Lord Brahma; this is again a unique feature not seen in any other temple. In general, Lord Brahma sits on the lotus flower that stems out from the navel of the Lord. We can see and worship the sacred feet of the Lord through a small window in the outer prakaram.

The main deity of this temple is ‘Lord Bhoomipalaka Perumal’ also called as ‘Lord Kasinivendan Perumal’, an imposing image of Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture. The idols of Goddess Sridevi and Goddess Bhoodevi can be found on either side of Lord Vishnu.

One can see the feet of Lord Bhoomi Paalar from a wall opening while one goes around the temple. 250 litres of oil is needed to bathe the presiding deity idol which is 12 feet in length.
