Kailasanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kovalam, a coastal town in Thiruporur Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and Mother is called as Kanakavalli Thayar. This temple is situated on the shores of Bay of Bengal.



History

Kovalam served as an important sea port from Sangam age (600 BC) to 16th Century CE. This temple is believed to be built by traders guild during Pallava rule. The Avudaiyar which houses the Lingam bears an inscription “Sri Satheruman Murthiper”. ‘Sat' means a trade guild and ‘Satheruman' refers to Lord Shiva. The script is paleographically dated to 8th Century AD according to Archaeological Survey of India. There is an inscription found on the Dakshinamurthy idol. It records the name of the merchant who installed the idol.


The Adhishtanam (base) of the Maha Mandapam has a 3 line inscription. The traders exported many items from Kovalam sea port and the taxes levied for these exports was gifted to the temple for the maintenance of the temple and conducting worship & festivals. The temple received patronage from Pallavas, Cholas and Vijayanagara Kings. Kovalam was called as Veera Chola Pattinam during Rajaraja Chola I period.

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 6.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.

Festivals

Tirukarthikai in November-December, Mahashivaratri in February-March and Pradosham days are observed in the temple. Special Pujas are conducted on Poornima days-full moon days to Lord and Mother.

Prayers

This Temple is considered as Parihara sthalam for Marriage obstacles. There is a strange custom of girls facing marriage problems tie the wedding knot to Mother directly themselves in the shrine. Men tie the knot to Nandhi before Lord Shiva shrine.

The temple is located at about 500 meters from Kovalam Bus Stand, 1 Km from Kovalam ECR Bus Stop (Kovalam Koot Road Bus Stop), 2 Kms from Thiruvidandai, 5 Kms from Kelambakkam, 20 Kms from Mamallapuram, 24 Kms from Thiruvanmiyur, 25 Kms from Thiruvanmiyur Railway Station, 36 Kms from Chennai Airport, 37 Kms from Chengalpattu, 38 Kms from Chennai Central Railway Station and 38 Kms from Chennai. Kovalam is situated on ECR Road connecting Chennai with Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Chidambaram and Nagapattinam. All the buses running in this route will Stop here. Bus facilities to Kovalam are available from Chennai from various points.
