Sundareswarar Temple, Annappanpettai, Mayiladuthurai

Sundareswarar Temple  is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Annappanpettai Village near Nangur in Sirkazhi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Sundareswarar / Vilwa Vana Nathar and Mother is called as Azhagammai / Sundarambal / Azhagu Vana Mulaiyammai. This Temple is considered as one of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams and Shiva Peedam Temples of Nangur.



This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This Temple is the 62nd Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 8th sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. This temple is situated on the southern banks of the river Uppanaru. This temple is also very close to the Bay of Bengal, near Poompuhar.

History

The Temple might have been built during 6th century CE. The Temple was reconstructed by Cholas in 10th century CE and was extensively renovated by Marathas. This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE). This place was called as Kalikkaamoor during 7th Century CE but currently called as Annappanpettai.

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 08.00 AM to 10.00 AM and 05.00 PM to 07.30 PM.

Festivals

Theerthavari in Masi full moon day & Masi Maha Shivaratri (Feb-Mar), Aippasi Skanda Shashti & Annabishekam (Oct–Nov), Purattasi Navaratri in (Sep-Oct) and Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (Dec-Jan) are the festivals celebrated here. Goddess Azhagammai alone visits the beach during the Theerthavari festival on Masi Maham day and provide darshan to the devotees. It is unique to note that Lord Shiva will not accompany Goddess Parvathy during Theerthavari. Special Poojas are performed for goddess Parvathy on Aadi and Thai month Fridays and Laksharchana is performed during Navratri. Monthly Pradoshams are also observed regularly.

Prayers

Those who are suffering from incurable stomach pain need to worship Lord Shiva of this temple by reciting the Thala Pathigam for eleven consecutive Mondays in their home and should visit the temple on 12th Monday to worship the Lord personally. It is said that their incurable stomach ailments will be cured if they follow the above procedure. Devotees believe that consuming Vilwa leaves used for the archana of the Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy have medicinal effects to cure diseases. Devotees pray to Lord Shiva for a healthy life and for the dilution of the intensity of past karmas.

Connectivity

The temple is located at about 3 Kms from Keezhamoovarkarai, 4 Kms from Mangaimadam, 6 Kms from Thiruvengadu, 7 Kms from Nangur, 10 Kms from Annankoil, 13 Kms from Poompuhar, 14 Kms from Sirkazhi Bus Stand, 15 Kms from Sirkazhi, 17 Kms from Sirkazhi Railway Station, 17 Kms from Vaitheeswaran Kovil, 30 Kms from Mayiladuthurai and 170 Kms from Trichy Airport. Annappanpettai is situated on Sirkazhi to Keezhamoovarkarai bus route. Frequency of buses are less on this route. Town Buses plying from Sirkazhi to Konaiyampattinam go via Annappanpettai.
