History
Semmencheri was part of Thondaimandalam which comprised of erstwhile North Arcot, South Arcot and Chengalpet districts of Tamilnadu state along with some parts of Andhra Pradesh state. Thondaimandalam was ruled by Pallavas with their headquarters as Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram as Port City. Belief is that the temple may be over 1500 years old and may have been built by the Pallavas, who were also responsible for the construction of several Divya Desams in this region including Thiru Kadal Mallai at Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram).

Later on, renovation work at this temple is said to have been undertaken by Nayak Kings and Chettiars. The experts from Archeological Survey of India (ASI) believe that the temple in its current form and structure may be about 500 years old. According to them, this temple should have been constructed between 1500 AD and 1600 AD and its structure is in the pattern of Udupi Renaissance. The Temple was in such a dilapidated condition till 2007 & has been renovated with excellent support from devotees and philanthropists.
