Masilamaneeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiruvaduthurai Village in Kuthalam Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District in Tamil Nadu, India. Presiding deity is called as Masilamaneeswarar / Gomuktheeswarar / Muktheeswarar / Mahalingeswarar / Kokazhi Nathar / Anaithezhuntha Nayagar / Puthira Thiyagar / Sembon Thiyagar / Bodhi Vana Nathar / Shivaloga Nayagar / Maha Thandaveswarar / Mukthi Thiyagar / Artha Thiyagar / Thiruvavaduthurai Udaiyar / Paramaswamy Thiruvavaduthurai Azhwar / Bothi Ambalavanar / Bhoogayileswarar and Mother is called as Oppillamulaiyammai / Athulya Kujambal / Abhaya Gujambal.

The temple is considered as one of the Parivara deities of Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalingeswarar Temple. The temple is considered one among the Pancha Linga Kshetrams of Sathanur. The temple is considered one among the Thiruvasaga Sthalams and Thiruvisaippa Temples. This temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This temple is the 153^rd Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 36^th sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. This temple is considered as one of the 44 Paadal Petra Sthalams where the Moovar (Thirugnana Sambanthar, Appar and Sundarar) had rendered their Pathigams.

History

The temple might have been built during 6^th century CE by Pallavas. The temple was completely reconstructed in granite by Parantaka Chola I. The temple had also received extensive patronage from Cholas, Pandyas and Vijayanagara Kingdom. There are more than 100 inscriptions in this temple. Inscriptions dating back to Paranthaka Chola I, Rajaraja Chola I, Rajendra Chola I, Rajathiraja Chola I, Rajendra Chola II, Kulothunga Chola I, Vikrama Chola, Rajaraja Chola II and Maravarman Vikrama Pandyan.

Inscriptions records the donations, gifts & grants made to this temple for conducting poojas, festivals, theatres for performing arts, mutts, construction activities, renovation activities carried out in this temple. Lord Shiva of this temple was called as Thiruvavaduthurai Devar / Thiruvavaduthurai Mahadevar / Thiruvavaduthurai Udaiyar / Thiruvavaduthurai Azhwar / Thiruvavaduthurai Perumanadigal and the goddess was called as Thirukaattu Kottamudaiya Periya Nachiyar in the inscriptions.

The temple remains open from 07.00 AM to 12.00 Noon and from 04.00 PM to 08.00 PM.

Festivals

Seven days Purattasi Brahmotsavam (Sep-Oct), Aippasi Annabishekam (Oct-Nov), Thiru Karthigai (Nov-Dec), Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (Dec-Jan), Masi Maha Shivrathri (Feb-Mar) and Thai Rathasaptami (Jan-Feb) are the festivals celebrated here. Monthly pradoshams are also observed here.
