Somanathaswami Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Needur Village in Mayiladuthurai Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District in Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Arul Somanatha Swamy / Nirudha Gana Piriyar / Padi Padiya Devar / Karkadeswarar / Bhadrakaleeswarar / Gana Nardana Sankarar and Mother is called as Veyuru Tholiyammai / Adhigandhi Ammai / Aalala Sundari / Vedanayagi / Aditya Abayapradambigai.



This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns by Tamil Saivite Nayanars Sundarar and Tirunavukkarasar. This Temple is considered as 75th Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 21st sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Needur has been mentioned in one of the ancient Sangam literature, Akananuru. Needur is the birth place of Saint Munaiyaduvar, one of the 63 Nayanmars.

History

Needur is considered as the birth place of Saint Munaiyaduvar, one of the 63 Nayanmars. As the temple is mentioned in Devaram hymns, the temple might have existed from 8th Century CE. There are inscriptions available in this temple dating back to the reign of Chola Kings Kulothunga Chola I, Rajathiraja Chola II, Rajathiraja Chola III and Rajaraja Chola III. This temple is under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE). The last consecration ceremony took place on 05.04.2007.

Temple Opening Time

The Temple remains open from 08.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon and 04.00 p.m. to 08.00 p.m.

Festivals

Aavani Vinayakar Chaturthi (Aug-Sep), Purattasi Navaratri (Sep-Oct), Aippasi Skanda Shashti (Oct–Nov), Aippasi Annabishekam (Oct–Nov), Thiru Karthikai (Nov-Dec), Thai Makara Sankranti (Jan-Feb), Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (Dec-Jan), Chitra Pournami (Apr-May) and Masi Shivrathri (Feb-Mar) are the festivals celebrated here. Munaiyaduvar Guru Pooja is celebrated in the Tamil month of Panguni, when the moon enters the Pushya nakshatra (lunar mansion). Monthly pradoshams are also observed regularly. Special poojas are performed to Suryan on every Sundays here.

The Temple is situated on Mayiladuthurai to Manalmedu Route. Mayiladuthurai to Manalmedu bus passes through this place.
