Kailasanathar Temple, Thiruporur, Chengalpattu

Kailasanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiruporur Town in Thiruporur Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and Mother is called as Balambigai. The temple is situated on top of the Pranava Mountain to the north west of Thiruporur Murugan Temple.


Legends

Pranavamalai:

It is said that Pranava (Omkara) had worshipped Lord Muruga and has taken the form of a hill in Thiruporur. Hence, the hill came to be called as Pranavamalai.

As per legend, it is believed that Lord Mahavishnu and Goddess Mahalakshmi have worshipped Lord Kailasanathar and Balambika on top of Pranava Malai Hill

Vembadi Vinayakar:

Goddess Mahalakshmi took the form of a Neem tree in Tirupporur and did penance. There is a temple for Lord Vinayaka under this Neem Tree near this Pranavamalai. He is famously known as Vembadi Vinayakar.

The Temple

The Temple is situated on top of the Pranava Mountain. The entrance to the hill is situated the north west of Thiruporur Murugan Temple. The temple can be reached after climbing 100 steps. It is unusual to find the Shiva Temple on the top of the hill and Murugan temple at the base. This temple is facing towards east with the entrance on the south. Dhwaja Sthambam, Balipeedam and Nandi can be found outside the temple facing the sanctum through a window.


Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Vinayagar, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahma and Durga are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Utsava idols of this temple are kept in Thiruporur Murugan Temple for safe keeping. Mother is called as Balambigai. She is housed in a separate east facing shrine. Her shrine is situated to the left side of the sanctum.


Shrines of Kasi Viswanathar, Bhairavar, Suryan and Veerabhadra can be found in the inner prakaram. A photo of Chidambaram Swamigal can be seen in the prakaram around the sanctum. Shrines of Vinayagar, Navagrahas, Murugan, Brahma and Vallalar can be seen at the end of the steps. There is a secret underground tunnel connecting this temple with the ashram of Chidambaram Swamigal at the base of the hill. This tunnel is currently closed.

The Temple remains open 07.00 to 12.00 noon am from 04.30 pm o 07.00 PM.

The temple is located at about 750 metres from Thiruporur Bus Stand, 16 Kms from Mahabalipuram, 24 Kms from Chengalpattu, 26 Kms from Chengalpattu Junction Railway Station, 32 Kms from Thiruvanmiyur, 41 Kms from Chennai Airport, 45 Kms from Chennai Central Railway Station and 45 Kms from Chennai. Thiruporur is situated on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (IT Highway) connecting Chennai and Mahabalipuram via Kelambakkam. Frequent Buses are available from Chennai to reach Thiruporur.
