Madhangeeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Nangur Village near Sirkazhi Town in Sirkazhi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Madhangeeswarar and Mother is called as Mathangi / Raja Mathangi / Mathangeeswari. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Sundarar had a mention about this Temple. This Temple is considered as one of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams and Shiva Peedam Temples of Nangur. This Temple is considered as the main Rudra kshetra (Hridhaya Kshetra) of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams.

History

The Temple might have been in existence from 6th century CE and completely rebuilt by Cholas in 10th century CE. This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).

The temple remains open from 08.00 AM to 12.00 Noon and 05.00 PM to 8.30 PM.

Festivals

The Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur celebrates the Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival in Rohini star day in the Tamil month of Vaikasi similar to the Ekadasa Garuda Seva of Thirunangur Divyadesams. The Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival was celebrated in grand manner during Chitra Pournami in ancient times and was discontinued in the 20th century. The ardent devotees of Lord Shiva revived this festival in 2016 and is now being celebrated every year. The Lords of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur participates in this festival. Vaikasi Wedding festival (May-Jun), Karthigai Deepam (Nov-Dec), Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (Dec-Jan) and Masi Maha Shivaratri (Feb-Mar) are the other festivals celebrated here. Pradoshams are also observed here.

Prayers

Devotees worship Mathangi for wedding boon, excellence in education & music and for relief from speech impairments. Goddess Mathangi is considered as the Guru of Goddess Saraswathi. Hence Aksharabhayasam (beginning of education) is performed for the children in her shrine. This is generally done on Ashtami (eighth day) or Pournami (full moon) day when alphabet is written on the tongue of the child in honey.

This treatment is also done for those children having speech impairments. Those facing delays in getting married, tie a full unhusked coconut (Matta Thengai in Tamil) in her shrine and offer Moong Payasam as Neyvedhyam.  Devotees perform abhishekam to the two Nandis in this temple for removing obstacles in marriage alliances.

Devotees light seven lamps made of flour & 27 ghee lamps sugar and offer sweet pudding (Sarkarai Pongal) nivedhana to Anandha Vada Bhadra Maha Kali Amman on Poorniam (full moon days) for relief from Sarpa and Chevvai dosham. Performing Kumkum archana and offering red clothes to the three goddesses in this temple will relief one from Brahma Hatya dosha.

The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Annankoil, 4 Kms from Thiruvengadu, 10 Kms from Vaitheeswarankovil, 10 Kms from Sirkazhi Bus Stand, 11 Kms from Vaitheeswarankovil Railway Station, 11 Kms from Poompuhar, 11 Kms from Sirkazhi, 13 Kms from Sirkazhi Railway Station, 13 Kms from Sembanarkoil, 15 Kms from Thirukadaiyur, 23 Kms from Tharangambadi, 23 Kms from Mayiladuthurai and 147 Kms from Trichy Airport. Buses are available from Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai only at specific hours. Regular buses are available to Annankoil from Sirkazhi. The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Annankoil. The Temple is situated on Sirkazhi – Annankoil – Nangur – Thiruvengadu route.
