Yogeeswarar Temple, Mangaimadam, Mayiladuthurai

Yogeeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Mangaimadam Village near Nangur in Sirkazhi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Yoganatha Swamy / Yogeeswarar and Mother is called as Yogambal / Yogambigai. This Temple is considered as Guru Parihara Sthalam. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Sundarar had a mention about this Temple. This Temple is considered as one of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams and Shiva Peedam Temples of Nangur.

History

The temple is said to have been in existence from 6th century CE and completely rebuilt in 10th century CE by the Cholas. This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).


The Temple

This temple is facing towards west, but the entrance is from the eastern side. Vinayagar shrine can be seen immediately after the entrance arch. The temple consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. Balipeedam and Nandi can be seen in the maha mandapam facing towards the sanctum. Presiding Deity is called as Yoganatha Swamy / Yogeeswarar and is facing west.


He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. It is said that sun rays fall on the Lingam during sunset. Yoga Dakshinamoorthy can be seen in the koshta wall. Mother is called as Yogambal / Yogambigai. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated in the maha mandapam to the right side of the sanctum. An idol of Lord Vishnu can be seen in the maha mandapam.


Shrines for Murugan with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Gaja Lakshmi, Bhairavar, Navagrahas, Suryan, Vishnu and Durga can be seen in the prakaram. Durga shrine is facing towards west which is a rare feature. Sthala Vriksham is Jackfruit tree. It is situated on the south west corner of the prakaram. Shrines of Vinayagar and Gyana Poongothai can be found under this tree. The temple tank is situated on the western side of the temple.

The Temple remains open from 07.00 AM to 09.00 AM and 06.00 PM to 08.00 PM.

Festivals

The Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur celebrates the Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival in Rohini star day in the Tamil month of Vaikasi similar to the Ekadasa Garuda Seva of Thirunangur Divyadesams. The Ekadasa Rishabaruda festival was celebrated in grand manner during Chitra Pournami in ancient times and was discontinued in the 20th century. The ardent devotees of Lord Shiva revived this festival in 2016 and is now being celebrated every year. The Lords of the Ekadasa Rudra Kshetrams of Nangur participates in this festival. Lord Yogeeswarar and Yogambal will visit the beach during the Theerthavari festival on Aippasi Amavasya day. Special abishekams and poojas are performed to Yoga Dakshinamoorthy on Guru Peyarchi (Transit) day.

The temple is considered as Parihara Sthalam for doshas related to Jupiter. Devotees pray here for mental peace and relief from stress.

Connectivity

The temple is located at about 2 Kms from Thiruvengadu, 3 Kms from Nangur, 6 Kms from Annankoil, 8 Kms from Poompuhar, 12 Kms from Sirkazhi Bus Stand, 12 Kms from Sirkazhi, 14 Kms from Sirkazhi Railway Station, 13 Kms from Vaitheeswaran Kovil, 27 Kms from Mayiladuthurai and 167 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is situated on Sirkazhi – Annankoil – Mangaimadam route. Buses are available from Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai only at specific hours. Regular buses are available to Annankoil from Sirkazhi.
