Gundar
Reservoir is located at the foot of the Western Ghats near the towns of Courtralam
and Sengottai. It is an important tourist place in Thirunelveli District. A
large number of domestic tourists on the way to Courtralam visit this dam and
park. Gundar Dam was constructed in the year 1983 to cater for the irrigation
requirements of the Thirunelveli district.
Gundar
is an earthen dam with a height and length of approximately 15 m and 389 m
respectively. The Gundar dam reservoir has an overall capacity is 0.70 Mcum.
The irrigation capacity of the dam is 454.50 ha of agricultural land. Gundar
Dam is used as a Medium Irrigation Project. The construction of the dam
commenced in 1979 and was completed in a span of four years.
This dam
site is noted for its salubrious climate and atmosphere. Just 1 km from Gundar
Dam to Western Ghats, a beautiful falls is located. To reach this particular
falls, only four wheel drive vehicle is suitable. This waterfall offers
excellent spot for picnic and family outing. Also a park near the dam with
numerous flowering plants and green trees is ideal for the children to enjoy.
This dam
is gaining popularity as a popular tourist spot among the people which was once
only visited by people from nearby places. Gundar Reservoir is a place that is
loved by families during the holidays and vacations. The amazing surroundings
and the climate of the place make it a more preferable tourist spot. The heavy
rains in the monsoon period restrict the tourist activities. Nature is at its
best during the winter months.
Gundar Dam
is located near to Sengottai. Sengottai is connected by road to most places in
Tamilnadu and Kerala. Sengottai is directly connected with the City
of Kollam via road and rail.
The nearest airport is located at Madurai (164 Kms) &
Trivandrum (100 Kms) roughly four hours by road and three hours by train.
