Lakshmi Narayana Temple, Akkur, Thiruvannamalai
Lakshmi
Narayana Temple is dedicated to Hindu God Vishnu located at Akkur Village in
Thiruvannamalai District of Tamilnadu. Akkur Village is located at about 20 Kms
from Kanchipuram on the Vandavasi Road. This Temple is almost 1300 years Old.
Presiding Deity is called as Lakshmi Narayana Perumal and Mother is known as Ambujavalli.
The beautiful presiding deity of Lakshminarayana Perumal in a sitting posture,
holding his consort, is an awesome sight.
As per
the legend, Lord appeared and revealed his existence near Tumburu Theertham at
Thirumala Hills, to a great scion called Doddacharyar. Doddacharyar fetched the
idols of Lord Lakshminarayana, Goddess Ambujavalli, Garuda and Viswaksenar
which were found hidden in the earth, installed it at Akkur village and built
the temple. Later, Sri Ramanuja and Sri Nigamantha Mahadesikan and Saint Srimad
Akkur Andavan were also installed.
It is
believed that whoever worships the Lord here is bestowed with prosperity. The
temple was renovated in 2003 and a mahasamprokshanam was conducted. The
ancient temple may not attract devotees from far and wide to its precincts
daily, yet it has its own unique features. The temple is very small but
beautiful and apart from the sanctum sanctorum, there are only a couple of
other shrines dedicated to Andal and Ambujavalli Thayar. Several ancient
inscriptions are also found in the temple.
According
to archaeologists, Akkur village originally comprised six hamlets —
Samburanatham, Singili Pattarai, Thatha Pattarai, Dhaneswaran Modu,
Purangavasam and Srinivasapuram. Later it was named Akkur. Several functions
and special pujas are being organized every year for Sri Jayanthi, Hanumath
Jayanthi, Vaikunta Ekadasi Garuda Seva, Purattasi third Saturday, Panguni
Uthiram and Tamil New Year's day. The Temple is located at about 20 Kms
from Kanchipuram on the Vandavasi
Road. It is located at about a km further to the west of Pesum Perumal Temple
at Koozhamandal.
