Thiru Payatrunathar Temple  is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiru Payathangudi Village in Nagapattinam Taluk in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Thiru Payatrunathar / Muktapureeswarar and Mother is called as Kaaviya Kanni / Nethrambigai. This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This Temple is the 195th Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 78th sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu.

History

The Temple is believed to be built in 6th century CE and was completely reconstructed in granite by Cholas. The temple was extensively renovated by Thanjavur Nayak Kings and Nattukottai Chettiyars. Inscriptions dated to Chola King Rajaraja Chola III can be found in this temple. His inscriptions records the gifts and grant of lands made to this temple. The last consecration ceremony was performed in 06th June 2011.

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 07.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon and from 04.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Festivals

Brahmotsavam will be held Visaka Nakshatra day in the month Vaikasi. Chitra Pournami (Apr-May), Aadi Pooram (Jul-Aug), Avani Vinayagar Chathurthi (Aug-Sep), Purattasi Navaratri (Sep-Oct), Aippasi Skanda Sashti & Annabishekam (Oct-Nov), Thiru Karthigai (Nov-Dec), Thai Pongal & Thaipoosam (Jan-Feb ) and Masi Maha Shivaratri (Feb-Mar) are the festivals celebrated here. Special poojas are conducted of Aadi Fridays for Ambal and Karthigai Somavaram to Lord Shiva. Monthly pradoshams are also observed here.
