Indra came in the form of Gautama and made love to Ahalya. As he was escaping, he was caught by Rishi Gautama who was returning to the Ashramam from his bath. Gautama cursed Ahalya and Indra both for this act. Ahalya was converted to stone, while Indra was cursed with one thousands of female genitalia (Sahasrayoni).
Later, taking pity on both, Gautama converted both these curses. Indra curse was converted to thousands of eyes he came to be known as Sahasraksha. As for Ahalya, Gautama granted her the boon that she would be liberated by the touch of the feet of Lord Rama (Lord Vishnu). To get rid of sin, he came down to earth and reached Arjunapuri (Kadayanallur) Sthalam and he consecrated two Shiva Lingas namely Neelamani Nathar and Arunachaleswarar and worshipped these Lingas. Legends
Pusalar was a Shaiva, a devotee of the god Shiva. He wanted to create a grand temple for Shiva, but did not have the money to do so. Thus, Pusalar decided to build a temple to Shiva in his mind with his imagination. He followed the rituals of temple-building, sanctified the ground and laid the first stone of his mind temple on an auspicious day. Over course of time, he completed his mind temple and selected a holy day for the Kumbabishekam ceremony, when the temple is consecrated and the image of God installed in the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanatorium).

The Pallava king Kadavarkon had just completed a grand Shiva temple in the capital Kanchipuram and selected the same day for consecration of his temple. Shiva appeared in the king's dream and instructed him to postpone the date of consecration as he would be journeying to Thiruninravur for the consecration of his devotee Pusalar's temple on the same day. The king postponed the date as per the divine decree and hastened to see the magnificent temple of Pusalar, which Shiva favored over his own. However, on reaching Thiruninravur, the king could find any stone temple visible in the town and was perflexed.

He reached Pusalar's house and informed Pusalar about his dream. The saint revealed that the temple existed in his heart. The king was astonished by Pusalar's devotion and bowed down to him and worshipped him. Pusalar consecrated the temple on the ordained day and continued his worship until his death, when he is said to have attained Kailash, the abode of Shiva. Pallava King fulfilled the Pusalar wish by building this Temple and consecrated Shiva Linga and named it as Irudhayeelswarar.

Lord cured disease of Kulasekhara son of King Ravi Varman:
A king ruling this region Ravi Varman by name was a staunch Shiva devotee. The king was much worried that no physician could cure the illness suffered by his son Kulasekharan. A Shiva devotee met the king and advised him to worship the Lord of this place. His son was cured. The king built this temple then.
The Temple
The presiding deity blesses the devotees in his Arthanareeswara form. The taste of the tamarind tree here is both sweet and citric. Lord Sri Arthanareeswara has Ganga on the head. On the Shiva-male part (right) there is crescent moon. Maharishi Brungi is the procession deity of the temple. During the Aani Brahmmotsavam, Lord Shiva and Ambica are placed close together and sage Brungi is placed as if he worships Lord Shiva alone ignoring Ambica. The ritual goes to show the anger of Ambica on Brungi for his attitude, Lord Shiva appearing as Arthanareeswara and Brungi correcting himself by worshipping both together. As the Lord is amidst Tamarind trees, He is named Chinthamani Nathar. Chintha means tamarind.  The fruits of these trees are both sweet and citric in taste.
