Kannadian Chathram, Cheranmahadevi, Thirunelveli
Kannadian
Chathram is located at Cheranmahadevi in Thirunelveli District of Tamilnadu. Kannadian
Chathram, an Annadhaana Chathram – choultry offering free food – which is
defunct now is housed inside this temple complex. Kannadian is the name
associated with a pious, priestly youngster from the present Karnataka state
who visited this region and constructed a canal – which is still referred as ‘Kannadian
Kalvai’ – Kannadian Canal, and several irrigation systems with the gifts that
he received from the Chera King. This youth prayed to Sage Agasthiyar Maharishi
and got his divine vision. The Sage guided him on this mission.
Several
acres of agrarian lands along this canal are said to be earmarked for this
choultry. Cheranmahadevi is located at about 50 Kms from Tenkasi, 17 Kms from
Ambasamudram, 6 Kms from Veeravanallur, 30 Kms from Thirunelveli, 190 Kms from
Madurai & 155 Kms from Thiruvananthapuram. Buses are available every 15
minutes from Thirunelveli to Cheranmahadevi. Nearest Railway Station is located
at Cheranmahadevi and Nearest Airport is located at Madurai and
Thiruvananthapuram.
