Mahakalanathar Temple is a Hindu temple located at Thirumakalam in Thiruvarur district of Tamilnadu. The presiding deity is Shiva. He is called as Mahakalanathar. His consort is known as Bayakshambikai. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Thirugnana Sambandar. This place is called as Ambar Maakaalam. This temple is noted for its shrine to Kali and to Kaalakandeswarar. Ambar Maakaalam is considered to be 172nd Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 55th Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu.

The Temple remains open from 6.00 am to 12.00 noon and from 5.00 pm to 8.30 pm.
Festivals
Vaikasi Soma Yaga festival is an important event in the temple celebrated on the Aslesha (Aayilyam) star day in May-June. Lord Shiva graces the devotees on this day with Mother Parvati wearing sandals and holding Maddhalam the drum and pot of honey.
Literary Mention
Ambar Maakaalam is considered to be 172nd Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 55th Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. The temple is praised by the three saints of Saivism-Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar. 
Tirugnanasambandar describes the features of the deity as:
கொலையார் மழுவோடு கோலச் சிலையேந்தி
மலையார் புனலம்பர் மாகா ளம்மேய
கிளரும் சடையணணல் கேடில் கழலேத்தத்
தளரும் முறுநோய்கள் சாருந் தவந்தானே.

Connectivity
This Shivastalam is located near Poonthottam on the Peralam Tiruvarur railway line and is noted for its shrine to Kali and to Kaalakandeswarar. Thirumakalam is on the Kumbakonam-Karaikkal route. Ambal is located at about 5 Kms east of Poonthottam, 9 Kms south east of Peralam, 24 Kms from Thiruvarur, 25 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 40 Kms from Kumbakonam, 80 Kms from Thanjavur and 140 Kms from Trichy. Ambar Maakaalam is situated at about 1 Km from here on the west direction. Nearest Railway Station is located at Thiruvarur & Poonthottam and Nearest Airport is located at Trichy.
