Thirupperuvelur Abhimuktheeswarar Temple, Manakkal Ayyampet, Thiruvarur
Thirupperuvelur Abhimuktheeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple located at Manakkal Ayyampet in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. The temple is dedicated to Shiva, as the moolavar presiding deity, in his manifestation as Abhimuktheeswarar. His consort, Parvati, is known as Baagampriyal. The place is also known as Thirupperuvelur / Kattur Ayyampet. This is one of the 78 “Maadakovils”, built on an elevation, by Ko Chenkata Chola Nayanar so that elephants cannot enter the sanctum.




It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanmars Tirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar. This is the 209th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 92nd Sthalam on the south side of River Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Arunagiri Nathar sang Thiruppugazh on Lord Muruga of this temple.



Legends
Peruvelur:
Lord Muruga worshiped Shiva; hence this place is called as Peruvelur.
Vishnu got back his Male appearance from Mohini form:
Vishnu is said to have prayed to Shiva to lose his Mohini form. Vishnu got back his male appearance after Mohini appearance to destroy asura by worshipping Shiva of this temple. There is a separate shrine for Perumal inside the temple.

Legend of the tussle between Aadi Sesha and Vayu:
This Sthalam is also associated with the legend of the tussle between Aadi Sesha and Vayu. This is a little piece of the Kailash that was thrown apart in the fight between Aadhi Sesha and Vayu Bhagwan.
The Temple
This is one of the 78 “Maadakovils”, built on an elevation, by Ko Chenkata Chola Nayanar so that elephants cannot enter the sanctum. There are 17 steps to reach the Sanctum. Lord is Swayambu Moorthy Lingam housed on Square Avudayar. This east facing temple has a 3 tiered Rajagopuram. Presiding Deity is called as Abhimuktheeswarar / Priyanathar / Avimuktheswarar. Nataraja Saba is present in a mandapam of Wovval Nethi form. There is a separate shrine for Perumal inside the temple.



Mrugandu Maharishi’s statue is one of the koshta moortham. Mother is called as Niraikkonda Nayagi / Baagampriyal / Abinnammbaal / Elavar Kuzhali. There is a separate Sannadhi for Ambal in sitting posture – Veerasanam with four hands and faces east. Sthala Vriksham is Vanni Tree. Theertham is Saravana Poikai. There are shrines to Ganesha, Vaikunta Narayana Perumal, and Subramanya. There are also shrines to Maha Lingeswarar, Bhairavar, Saraswateeswarar, Jambukeswarar, Brahmapureeswarar, Surya, Saneeswara and Durga.



Festivals
This small temple celebrates Karthikai Deepam each year. Two worship services are offered here each day.

Tirugnanasambandar describes the feature of the deity as:
விழையாதார் விழைவார்போல் விகிர்தங்கள் பலபேசிக்
குழையாதார் குழைவார்போற் குணம்நல்ல பலகூறி
அழையாவு மரற்றாவு மடிவீழ்வார் தமக்கென்றும்
பிழையாத பெருமானார் பெருவேளூர் பிரியாரே.
Prayers
It is considered as parihara Sthalam for Sukran; people with debt burden worship the Lord here. People with stammering difficulty pray here to get rid of their problem.

Connectivity
The Temple is located at about 11 Kms from Thiruvarur, 4 Kms from Thirukkannamangai, 5 Kms from Engan, 12 Kms from Nannilam, 6 Kms from Srivanchiyam, 32 Kms from Kumbakonam and 110 Kms from Trichy. This temple is located on Thiruvarur to Kumbakonam road. All the buses from Thiruvarur to Kumbakonam pass through Manakkal Ayyampet. From main road one has to walk to a distance of 1 Km. Nearest Railway Station is located at Thiruvarur and Nearest Airport is located at Trichy.
