Uthira Pasupatheeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Hindu God Shiva located at Tiruchengattankudi in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. The historical name of the place is Ganapatheeswaram. Presiding Deity is called as Uthira Pasupatheeswarar / Ganapatheeswarar. His consort, Parvati, is known as Vaaitha Tirukuzhal Umai Nayaki. Sthala Vriksham is Kattathi Tree. Theerthams associated with this temple are Surya and Chandra Pushkarani.





Though it is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, it is more famous for its Ganesha (Ganapathi) icon Vatapi Ganapathi, bought from Vatapi (Badami) as a war trophy by Paranjothi, Pallava commander during Narasimha Pallava battle with Pulikesin. Siruthonda Nayanar is associated with this shrine. It is considered to be the birthplace of Siruthonda Nayanar. It is considered as one of the temples where Lord Shiva enacted his holy play (Tiruvilayadal).





Tiruchenkattankudi is the site of one of the nine Nava - Thandavams of Shiva Thiruvalangadu - Oordvatandavam, Kailasam - Veda Thandavam, Thiruvengadu - Rahasyatandavam, Chidambaram - Ananda Thandavam, Madurai - Kaal Maari Aadiyadu, Kumbakonam - Aadalvallar Thandavam, Vazhuvur - Dharukavana Thandavam, Atikai - Tripura Thandavam, and Tiruchenkattankudi - Ubayapaadanartanam.





It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanmars Tirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar. This is the 196th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 79th Sthalam on the south side of River Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. This Shivastalam is located near to Thirupugalur and the Vaishnava Divya Desam Thirukkannapuram.

Temple Opening Time
The temple is open from 6.45 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.
Festivals
Six worship services are offered here each day. Chithirai Bharani Child Meat Cooking Festival (Pillaikari) in April-May; Margazhi Sadaya Sashti Ganapathy festival in December-January; Shivarathri in February-March; Tirukarthikai in November-December and Aipasi Annabishekam in October-November are the festivals celebrated in the temple. Amudhu Padayal festival is celebrated in the Tamil month of Chittirai and one special prasadam in the name of “Seeralan Kari” is being made only on that day with the combination of some medicinal products. It is said to bless childless couples with pregnancy. Vinayaka Chaturthi is also celebrated with great pomp here.

The temple is praised in the hymns of Saints Tirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar and Arunagiriar. This is the 196th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 79th Sthalam on the south side of River Cauvery in Chozha Nadu.
Thirunavukkarasar describes the feature of the deity as:
பாலினால் நறுநெய்யாற் பழத்தினாற் பயின்றாட்டி
நூலினான் மணமாலை கொணர்ந்தடியார் புரிந்தேத்தச்
சேலினார் வயல்புடைசூழ் செங்காட்டங் குடியதனுள்
காலினாற் கூற்றுதைத்தான் கணபதீச் சரத்தானே.
Prayers

The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Thirukkannapuram, 3 Kms from Thirumarugal, 4 Kms from Thirupugalur, 20 Kms from Karaikal, 25 Kms from Nagapattinam, 37 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 15 Kms from Nannilam, 21 Kms from Thiruvarur and 134 Kms from Trichy. Buses to Nagapattinam and Kumbakonam pass through Thirupugalur. The temple is about 3 km away from this place. Auto facility is available. Buses are available from Thiruvarur and Thirumarugal. Nearest Railway Station is located at Thiruvarur and Nearest Airport is located at Trichy.
