Seshapureeswarar Temple, Raa Patteeswaram, Thiruvarur

Seshapureeswarar Temple, Raa Patteeswaram, Thiruvarur
Seshapureeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Raa Patteeswaram Village in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. This Thevara Vaipu Sthalam is little known but has many special features and is located at Raa Patteeswaram near Manakkal Ayyampet close to the main road. It is maintained by Nattukkottai Nagarathaar Community.

The Temple
The west facing Temple has no Gopuram in the front. The shrine, at a slightly elevated place has Lakshmi and Saraswathi on both sides of the entrance. The only outer Prakaram is full of grass which must be cut to clear the way for devotees who wish to go around the temple. Maha mandapam unusually houses many Moorthis who normally occupy the Goshtam / separate shrines in the outer Prakaram.

A big idol of Ganapathi, very well carved one is seen here. A beautiful sculpture of Subramanya seated on Peacock is seen with his consorts. The Murthi, carved in a single stone, with six hands should be a delight the devotees. The huge idol of Bhairava is also a must watch. The crisply carved Murthi with Jwala Kesam, Tamarukam, Pasam, Bhiksha Patram, Kapala mala and Tirishulam is an outstanding one. Ashtami (eighth day after Full moon day) puja is conducted for Bhairava.

Presiding Deity is called as Seshapureeswarar, as the figure of a serpent is seen on the bana Linga. Ambikai, facing south is known as Andhapura Nayaki. Childless couples come here and take bath in the Temple Tank and worship the Lord and The Goddess to get blessed. Although a separate "Padhigam" is not available for this place, it has figured in Saint Appar's Thevaram Hymn, and called as "Vaipu Sthalam".

Nandhi, The Sacred Bull is normally seen in front of The Sanctum in all Shiva Temples, facing The Lord. There are places like Thiruppungur and Patteeswaram where the Bull can be seen few feet away from the straight line where it used to be, yet, facing the Shiva Linga Murthi. There are also some places like Tirumullaivayil, near Chennai, Somangalam, near Kunrathur and Thiru Vaigavur near Swamimalai where The Nandhi and The Lord face the same direction.

Here you can have a rare sight where the Nandhi, seated right in front of the main deity, seen turning his head by 90 degrees and looking at the big and marvelous Dakshinamurthy, nearby.

It is also unique that the Murthi, normally found in the Deva Koshta in the south prakaram is seen here in the Maha mandapam. This masterpiece has a smile which is unparalleled. His curling locks and the finely carved ornaments, Yagyopavitam on his chest are simply absorbing. It makes the devotee unmoved for a while. Pujas are conducted once in a day for this rarely visited Temple which is unique in many aspects.

Legends
Velvikudi:
Sage Vasishta was too sad. He thought that he had committed some mistake in deciding the Muhurta - auspicious day and time - for the coronation of Lord Sri Rama and was responsible for the events then. Though all the Rishis consoled him saying that it was the Chakravaha bird that wrongly pronounced the Mantras and caused sad results and there was no mistake on his part. Yet Sage Vasishta was not satisfied. He felt that there was some deficit in his penance and took on a pilgrimage to Shiva Sthalas.
Finally, he came to this place dense with gooseberry trees. While he was about to leave the place, a divine voice said that it was Sani Pradosham day and he should stay there and pray to Lord Shiva here. With pleasant shock and surprise, Sage Vasishta bathed in the holy tank and decided to chant the Rudra Mantra one crore times. He was relieved of the mental agony haunting him for years. Lord Shiva appeared before the sage and granted darshan.
Hearing this enlightening story of Vasishta and his penance in the place, the king built this temple and praised the Lord as Rudra Kodeeswarar and named the place as Velvi kudi where the sage performed his Yajna. It was the aim of the king who built the temple and created this place that the sounds of Vedas should ever be echoing in this holy place. He also wished that yajnas be conducted for the welfare of the people.
He donated this place with necessary amenities to some Brahmins-Vedic scholars. Yajna in Tamil means Velvi, hence the place was named Velvikudi which later changed as Velukudi. Kings had donated vast fertile lands and cattle for the revenues needed for the maintenance of the temple and conduct of yajnas.

Ramanadeeswarar Temple, Raamanadeechuram (Thirukkannapuram) – Legends

Ramanadeeswarar Temple, Raamanadeechuram (Thirukkannapuram) – Legends
Ramanadheeswaram:
Lord Rama on his way back to Ayodhya worshipped Shiva at this place and hence the name of the place as Ramanadheeswaram. Lord Shiva is praised here as Rama Natheswarar.
Mother holding Nandhi in her Hand:
Lord Sri Rama had to kill Ravana and his army to rescue Mother Sita from his captivity. To relieve himself from the doshas he incurred, he worshipped Lord Shiva in Rameswaram and proceeded to Ayodhya. On the way, he found a Shiva Linga under a Shenbaga tree and was ready to perform a puja. Nandhi the bull vehicle of Shiva took Rama as an ordinary human and prevented Rama to go close to the Linga. Ambica pulled Nandhi and helped Rama to perform Shiva Puja. Rama was happy and returned to Ayodhya after the Shiva puja. This legend has been depicted in the Somaskanda moortham of this temple showing Parvathi Devi is holding Nandhi in her hand (For safety reasons the Vigraham is in Thirupugalur temple).
Mother Shrine located outside the Temple:
A king ruling this region then, prayed to Lord Shiva for child boon and performed a yajna. Through his voice, Lord assured the king that Ambica would be his daughter. When the king set out on hunting, he found four female children, brought up them as his own daughters. They were Shiva devotees by their very nature. When they attained age, king begged Lord to marry them. Lord was happy to grant king’s wish. They are the Ambicas in four places – Sarivar Kuzhali in this temple, Vaaitha Tirukuzhal Nayaki in Tiruchengattankudi, Karundhar Kuzhali in Thirupugalur and Vandar Kuzhali in Thirumarugal.
They also bear the common name Shoolikambal as they helped a poor pregnant woman deliver her child during absence of her mother who was stuck at the other bank of the river due to heavy floods. Shool or Karu in Tamil means pregnancy. Karu Katha Ambica is another name of the Mother in the temple. As Ambicas returned late, they could not enter the temple. Mother shrines are outside temples in these four places. During the Arthajama pujas (final night pujas) samba rice with pepper, Seeragam, salt and ghee is offered as Nivedhana, a diet prescribed for mothers after delivery.

This is a very important festival in Jayamkonda Nathar Temple. Besides Jayamkonda Nathar the presiding deity, there is Vyasalinga in a separate shrine with Sage Narada on the left and Lord Vishnu behind. The Thirattupal is first placed in this shrine and taken on an elephant to Lord Rajagopalaswamy temple. This is then distributed to the devotees. The festival is continued now after some breaks in the past.
