Matrurai Varadeeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thiruvasi Village in Manachanallur Taluk in Trichy District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Maatrurainathar / Sameevaneswarar / Matrurai Varadeeswarar / Brahmapureeswarar. Mother is called as Balambigai / Bala Soundary. Tiruvasi (the corruption of its ancient name of Tiruppachil Ashramam) is located on the northern bank of river Kollidam (Coloroon).  This temple is the 116th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 62nd Sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery of Chozha Naadu. Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.

History
It is believed that this temple is 1500 years old and was built and renovated by Kings of the Hoysala, Chola and Pandiya dynasties. The historical name of this place is “Pachil Kutrathu Achiramam” which has been changed to Pachilachiramam. As per the stone inscriptions, during the Chola and Pandya period, the places on the northern bank of the river Kollidam was called “Parchil Kutram”. The village around it was called Thiruvachiramam. This was later changed to Thiruvasi. 





Also, in ancient times this place was densely populated with Vanni trees. For this reason, this place is also known as Sameevanam and the lord here is praised as Sri Sameevaneswarar. The temple has been constructed /expanded by different kings like Raja Raja Cholan I, Sundara Pandian, Kulothunga Cholan I and Krishna Deva Rayar. As per the stone inscriptions, during AD 1253 the Hoysala King ‘Veera Someswaran’ who ruled this area from Samayapuram as capital has generously offered ten thousand kalam (type of measurement) of paddy every year.

Festivals
11 day Vaikasi Brahmmotsavam in May-June, Tirukarthikai in November-December, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai Arudra Darshan in December-January, Thirukarthigai in November-December and Thai Poosam in January-February are the festivals celebrated in the temple. Other festivals like Vinayagar Chathurthi, Vijayadashami and Kanda Shashti are also celebrated in this Temple. Monthly Pradosham is also observed regularly.

Prayers
People pray to Lord lighting lamps with Iluppai oil for family welfare and removal of evil effects surrounding the family.  People also pray to Mother seeking child boon. Offering Sweet Pongal to God on Monday (or Thursday) and getting the holy water sprinkled is considered equivalent to visiting Kasi. Devotees believe that worshipping the goddess here for 5 consecutive Fridays will remove obstacles from their marriage proposals.
It is also believed that devotees who are facing stomach related illnesses, nervous weakness, epilepsy and paralysis can worship Lord Natarajar here for one Mandalam (45 days) to get relief. Parihar for snake bit, Epilepsy, Stomach ache, Paralysis &Asthma are cured by offering Vanni leaf archana to the Lord Nataraja. Thiruvasi is considered to be equivalent to visiting Kasi (Banaras). This temple is famous as a Parihara Sthalam for those suffering from Balarishta Dosham.
