Marundeeswarar Temple (Idaiyattrunathar Temple), T.
Edayar, Villupuram
Marundeeswarar Temple (also called Idaiyattrunathar
Temple) is a Hindu temple dedicated
to the Lord Shiva, located in T. Edaiyar, a village in Villupuram District in Tamil
Nadu. This place is called as Thiru Idaiyaru. Presiding Deity is called as Idaiyatreeswarar / Idaiyattru Nathar /
Marundeeesar / Sivanandeswarar / Krupapureeswarar / Adimathyarjuna Eswarar. Mother
is called as Sitridainayaki /
Gnanambika. The temple complex covers an area of one acre and all its
shrines are enclosed with concentric rectangular walls. The temple has a number
of shrines, with those of Marundeeswarar and his consort Irulneeki Thayar being
the most prominent.
In this temple, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy are
depicted in their wedding posture. In this temple, Lord Shiva is facing west
and Goddess Parvathi is facing east, as if they are exchanging garlands i.e.
Kalyana Kolam in contrast to the Upadesa posture as in other temples with a
similar orientation. Hence this temple is famous with devotees seeking wedding
boon. Devotees facing prolonged delays in their marriage proposals worship the
lord here and take the garlands exchanged between the God and Goddess to their
homes. It is believed that doing this will remove obstacles from their marriage
proposals.
The original complex is believed to have been built
by Cholas, while the present masonry structure was built during
the 16th century. In modern times, the temple is maintained and administered by
the Hindu
Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The temple is located on the Southern banks of Thenpennai
River on the Thirukkoilur -
Thiruvennainallur road. The presiding
deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Thevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.
This is the 45th Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam
and 13th Sthalam of Nadu Naadu. This is the birth place of the
Saivite guru Marai Gnana Sambandar. The temple has three daily
rituals at various times from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and four yearly
festivals on its calendar. Thayar Aarattu festival during the Tamil
month of Thai (January -
February) is the most prominent festival celebrated in the temple.
