Panangaateeswarar Temple, Panaiyapuram, Villupuram
Panangaateeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to
Lord Shiva located at Panaiyapuram Village in Villupuram District of Tamilnadu.
This place is also called as Puravar Panangkattur in ancient times. Presiding
Deity is called as Panangatteswarar / Nethrotharaneswarar / Kannamarntha
Nayanar. Mother is called as Sathyambikai / Meyyambikai / Puravambikai. This is
one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and 20th Shiva
Sthalam in Nadu Naadu. Saint Gana
Sambandhar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. This is
one of the five temples where a palm tree is the Sthala Viruksham. The other
four places are Thirupananthal, Thirupanaiyur, Thiruvothur and Thiru Vanparthan
Panangkattur.

History
This temple is believed to have been built by the Chola
King Kulothungan-I. It is believed that once this place was densely populated
with palm trees. This place is called Puravaar Panangkattur because Puravaar in
Tamil means forest and Panangkattur means full of palm trees. Saint Thirugnana
Sambandhar has also mentioned this place as Puravaar Panangkattur in his hymns.

This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 11.00 AM in the
morning and 5.00 PM to 7.30 PM in the evenings.
Festivals
Amongst others, Surya Pooja in the Tamil month of
Chithirai, Brahmotsavam in the Tamil month of Chithirai, Maha Shivarathri in
the Tamil month of Masi, Thiruvathirai in the Tamil month of Margazhi and Annabishekam
in the Tamil month of Aippasi are celebrated in a grand manner.

Prayers
This temple is a Parihara Sthalam for people suffering
from problems relating to eyesight. Sincere prayers have seen many a devotee
have his/her eyesight improved or restored, even in recent times. Devotees also
pray to Lord Shiva here for the removal of hurdles from marriage proposals, to
attain knowledge and wisdom. After the fulfillment of their prayers, the
devotees perform Abhishekam to the Lord and offer new clothes. They also donate
their munificence to the temple renovation.
