Madurai Kali Amman Temple is a Hindu Temple located at Thottiyam in Trichy District of Tamilnadu. Since the goddess came from Madurai, she is called as Madhurakali Amman. The 10-day main festival of this Temple in March is worth visiting and watching.

History
The name of the town is said to derive from the large number of Thottiya Nayakar caste peoples living there. Koranganatha Temple located in the outskirts of the town is a historic temple built during the Chola period in the 10th century.

The Temple
This temple is surrounded by lush green fields. There is a three-tier tower, 27-pillar mandapam and a five-pillar Arthamandapam gives notorious look to this temple. Many beautiful sculptures are carved inside the temple. The name of the Goddess is Madurai Kaliyamman. Sthala Vriksham is Vanni Tree and Theertham of this Temple is River Cauvery. There is shrine for Madurai Veeran in this Temple. Traces of a fort and an idol namely the Fort Karuppan are also in this village.


Temple Opening Time
The Temple remains open from 06:00 AM to 01:00 PM and 02:00 PM to 09:00 PM.
Festivals
In this temple, every year, the Aani Thirumanjana Vizha happens with great grandeur. During the Thirumanjana Vizha, thousands of devotees take the “Pal Kudam”, “Theertha Kudam”, “Sandana Kudam”, “Agni Satti” from the Thottiyam Cauvery River and do the “Alagu Kuthudhal” (Piercing of the Mouth/Tongue) and fulfill their prayers to the Goddess Madura Kali Amman. The Panguni Car Festival begins with the tying of the ‘Kaappu’ (Sacred wristlet), and the ‘Poochoridhal’.
Every year during the Panguni (Tamil month), The temple (Inner Prakara and the Sannidhi) will be closed because of the festival. In the time when it is closed, two big pots will be filled with ghee and eight dhotis will be made into two ‘Tiris’ (cords) and they will be lighted as lamps in the Karpagraha. Following this Pongal will be made in thousand pots and Pooja and worshipping will be done to the closed temple.
The ‘Thirutther Thalai Alangaram’ of the approximately thirty feet tall ‘Olai Pidari Amman’ and the nearly twenty-nine feet tall ‘Chinna Ther Madura Kali Amman’ and the ‘Ther Thookkum Nigazhchi’ during when the Amman will go for the Thiru Veedhi Ula and bless the devotees is a very important event.
