Marunthuvazh Malai – Legends
Maruthuva Malai:
The
history of Maruthuva Malai is steeped in legend. The story is that Maruthuva
Malai is a part of the Sanjeevini Mountain, which Lord Hanuman transported to
Sri Lanka to cure Lakshmana, the brother of Rama, the epic hero, when he
was injured by Ravana’s son, Indrajit. A fragment of the mountain is supposed
to have fallen here, at the spot where the Medicine Mountain is today.
Dwelling Place of Sages:
Being a
sacred hill, it is highly helpful to the followers of Sree Narayana and holy
sages like Agasthiyar, and Parmartha Lingeswarar. On top of this Hill, there
exists a cave called Pillathadam and this cave got the privilege of being
Narayana Guru’s meditating site for several years. At that time the hill was
covered with trees having thorn and animals like leopard and strong poisoned
snakes. When Guru was discovered with such animals the peoples of plain
were amazed with him and he said to them as advice that "animals will not
attack you if you have no fear or anger towards them or any inclination to hurt
them."
The
people living in the plains are mainly farmers who depend up on agriculture and
livestock for their living. During the period of that age Guru was filled
with absolute knowledge of wisdom and bliss of Brahma from Super Soul and
believed that the lord Siva appeared before Guru Narayana and then he was
converted to one of the greatest sage of the world. Srimat. Chattampi Swami and
Guru Narayana were friends and living together here for some years.
