Matsya Moorthy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located at Thuvarimaan near Madurai City in Madurai District of Tamil Nadu. The temple is located on the banks of Vaigai River. There are only few temples dedicated to Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu and this Temple is one among them. This place is considered as South Dwaraka and is believed to be the Avathara Sthalam of Matsya Moorthy.

The Temple
The temple is in accordance with the Pancharathra Agama, having Lord Shiva in the Centre, Aiyanar in South and the presiding Perumal Rangarajar in the Southwest. Presiding Deity is called as Rangarajar in a standing posture with his consorts Sridevi and Boodevi. As the Srirangam Temple is in between two rivers (Cauvery and Coloroon), Thuvariman temple also is in between Vaigai and a river called Kritamala as if they adore the neck of the Lord as a garland seeking his blessings. The place was earlier called as Thuvariamman and in course of time came to be known as Thuvariman.
Kings used to visit this temple and pray to Lord Rangarajar before going to the battle field seeking his blessings for victory. The sanctum Sanctorum of the temple is small showing that the kings prayed to God in all humility with their heads bent. Theertham associated with this Temple are Vaigai River and Kritamala River. The Karnataka government gave some lands for meeting the daily pujas of the temple according to the inscription found in the temple stones. Chakrathazhwar is in the right back of the Lord while Lord Hayagriva, the authority for high education, Garuda and Sri Krishna are in separate shrines.

The temple remains open from 5.00 a.m. to 8.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.
Festivals
Tamil New Year day, Vaikunda Ekadasi, Janmashtami-the birth day of Lord Krishna, Navarathri, Saturdays in the Tamil month of Purattasi (September-October), Karthikai-the festival of lamps, all the 30 days in the month of Margazhi-December-January are festive days.
Literary Mention
Thuvariman has the significance of being celebrated with the hymns (Mangalasasanam) of the Jeers (Teachers of Vaishnava philosophy).
Prayers
For relief from the hurdles in the way of marriage settlement, for children, for a peaceful and happy family life, for good education, for getting a job suiting to one’s qualifications, for removal of problems in the family, for cure from illness, for trade developments, devotees come to Thuvariman Lord seeking his blessings. Devotees offer silk cloths to the Lord and perform Thirumanjanam and offer jewels. For achieving high ranks in education, devotees perform special pujas to Lord Hayagriva, the Horse-faced Lord Vishnu.

The Temple is located at about 600 meters from Thuvariman Bus Stop, 5 Kms from Samayanallur Railway Station, 10 Kms from Madurai, 9 Kms from Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, 8 Kms from Madurai Periyar Bus Stand, 14 Kms from Madurai Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Terminus, 8 Kms from Madurai Railway Junction and 25 Kms from Madurai Airport. Buses from the Madurai Periyar Bus Stand bound to Kuruvithurai, Mannadimangalam pass through Thuvariman. The temple is close to the bus stop.
