Vandiyur Mariamman Temple is a Hindu Temple located at Vandiyur locality in Madurai City in Madurai District of Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Mariamman, the Hindu Goddess of rain. Vandiyur is famous for its Mari Amman temple, the huge temple tank and the float festival in it. The temple is located south of Vaigai river at Vandiyur. The huge man-made temple tank measuring about 1000 ft x 1000 ft is one of the landmarks of Madurai.

History
This is the location where the king Thirumalai Naicker excavated the soil to fabricate the bricks required for constructing his palace, Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal. The pit that was thus formed is seen as tank now. It is approximately 305 M long and 290 M wide, nearly equal area to that of Meenakshi Amman Temple. Built in 1645 A.D., this is the biggest tank in Tamil Nadu. 7-foot-tall Mukuruny Vinayakar idol in Meenakshi Amman Temple is believed to be found during excavation process of this pond.

Prayers
Ambica-Durga is the main Goddess-custodian deity of Madurai. She is praised as Aadhi Deivam. People of Madurai seek permission and approval from Her before planning any event. The first puja is dedicated to Ambica here by all temples before commencing their festivals. Realizing their wishes, devotees carry fire pots, milk pots and mulaipari. They also offer vastras to Mariamman. On Fridays and Tuesdays devotees light lemon lamps along the plank for better life and fortune.
