Vellore Fort Mosque, Vellore

Vellore Fort Mosque, Vellore
Vellore Fort Mosque is located inside Vellore Fort Complex in Vellore Town in Vellore District of Tamilnadu. This mosque is also known as Nawab Chanda Sahib Mosque. This Mosque was built in 1750 by Nawab Chanda Sahib. It is one of the important attractions in Vellore Fort. The entrance of the Masjid is on the northern side of the Vellore Fort. This mosque has been constructed using Brick and lime and still stands in good shape.

It is rectangular in shape. On the front side it is plastered with lime and bricks. This Indo-Saracenic style mosque has a prayer hall and the dimensions of the hall are 40 feet in length and 15 feet in breadth. At the centre of the mosque there is a big dome with minars on the sides. The mosque is decorated with floral designs. Presently, Muslims are not allowed to pray inside the fort mosque despite protest by several thousand people living in Vellore

Vellore's inhabitants believe that the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) is being discriminatory by excluding Muslims from the mosque while Hindus and Christians are not stopped from entering temple and church respectively. However, some refute the claims of the Muslims, as in the late 1980s, Muslims including the late Abdul Samad had given a commitment that the Muslims did not want to worship inside the fort structure, in support of re-opening of the Jalakandeswarar Temple. The local jamaat leadership was also against this move, and blamed fringe political organizations of whipping up communal dis-harmony.
