Nandeeswarar Temple, Trichy

Nandeeswarar Temple, Trichy
Nandeeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Nandhi, Bull vehicle of Lord Shiva located near Thayumanaswami Temple Theppakulam in Trichy City in Trichy District of Tamilnadu. This huge Nandhi belongs to the Rockfort Thayumanavar temple. Once upon a time the whole place was belonging to the temple. Now houses have come up in between and Nandhi is separated from the main temple.

Legends
Lord Shiva performs his cosmic dance during the Pradosha time (said to be between 4.30 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. every day) in between the two horns of Sri Nandi. Seeking darshan of Lord Shiva and going around the prakara during this time is equal to one crore rounds. The devotee should worship the Lord through the horns of Nandi. As Nandi alone is in this temple, this methodical worship brings double benefit to the devotee.
The Temple
This is a sub temple attached to Thayumanaswami Temple in Trichy Fort, built during the Chola period. It is also said that the Nandhi known as Adhikara Nandhi was part of the Thayumanavar temple. As the pathways to the temple were blocked in later days, Nandi was isolated from the main temple and thus became a temple by itself. Pujas are presently performed to Nandi alone. Lord Nandeeswarar in the temple is 7 feet tall, 10 feet long covering a circumference of 16 feet.
While Pradosha puja is offered to Nandhi in Lord Shiva temples only, this puja is offered in this temple where Nandi is alone (without Lord Shiva). A 40 feet tall flag post made of stone ageing 300 years is behind Nandeeswarar. There is a Nandhi on the top of the flag post – Kodimaram also. After puja to Nandhi, puja is performed to this flag post also. Lord Sevvanthi Vinayaka Shrine is under the flag post, also called Sevvandhinathar facing west. Veera Anjaneya shrine is situated near this shrine.
Temple Opening Time
The temple remains open from 8.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m.
Festivals
Special pujas are performed to Nandikeswara on Pradosham days – 13th day from new moon or full moon days.
Prayers
Devotees pray to Nandeeswarar seeking relief from various problems they face. Various types of dressings (Alankaras) are offered to Nandeeswarar including sandal paste covering during Pradosha time.
