Legends
Lord Murugan Stay at Jnana Malai:
As per the legend, Lord Muruga after marrying Valli at Vallimalai, on his way to Thiruthani, stopped on top of this hill and these footsteps are the evidence of it. Thiruthani and Vallimalai form a triangle with Jnana Malai and both can be seen from this hill. Vallimalai, Murugan Gnanamalai and Thiruthani are in a triangle and it is believed that to visit and seek the blessings of the lord in all three places in one day is special.
Arunagirinathar:
There is a wide belief that after Arunagirinathar sang the Thirupugazh here, Lord Muruga appeared before him and gave him his Thirupadha darshan. Even today, in the rock above the sanctum, there are foot-prints, which are ideally believed to be Lord Muruga’s foot prints.

He wants the same blessing again." This internal evidence of the Saint's life is found only in the Thiruppugazh of Jnana Malai.
