Srividya Rajarajeswari Temple, Nanganallur, Chennai

Srividya Rajarajeswari Temple, Nanganallur, Chennai
Srividya Rajarajeswari is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Mother Rajarajeswari located at Nanganallur, a well-known locality in Chennai City in Tamil Nadu.

Legends
Years ago, His Holiness Sri Chandra Sekharendra Saraswathi – praised as Maha Periyaval by the devotees was on a pilgrimage to Parangimalai for Lord Nandikeswara darshan.  He also visited Trisulam to worship Lord Trisula Nathar and Mother Tripura Sundari and proceeded through Pazhavanthangal, the place where the temple now exists.  He relaxed there under a tree.  Disciples relaxed in a nearby place. Periyaval was thirsty and called a disciple to get him water. But his words did not reach the disciple’s ears.  Soon, a little girl appeared before him and offered water. When Periyaval turned to return the water bowl to the girl, she was not there.
When Periyaval asked the disciples if they saw a little girl in the place, they replied in the negative. Periyaval sat in meditation for a while and found that the Little Girl was none other than Mother Rajarajeswari.  He called the elders and the people of the place and told them that Ambica was somewhere under the ground in the place and asked them to find it out. He continued his pilgrimage. The people of the place dug the place and found the idols of Mother as a little girl and Chandikeswari and informed Sri Jagadguru.  Sri Periyaval advised the people to install the idols and begin Sri Srividya Raja Rajeswari worship.
The Temple
Presiding Deity is called as Srividya Rajarajeswari. It is noteworthy that Mother Raja Rajeswari appears in this temple as a little girl. This is a rare of form of Mother Raja Rajeswari. The rays of Sun fall on the Lotus Feet of Mother Raja Rajeswari for six days in the month Tamil Masi (February-March) at about 6.00 a.m. Mother Rajeswari graces the devotees in sitting posture with Mothers Mahalakshmi, Saraswathi, Vinayaka and Murugan on both sides. As there is a shrine for Chandikeswara in Shiva Temples, there is one here for Chandikeswari. Lords Vinayaka, Muruga with His consorts Valli and Deivanai, Chandikeswari are in the shrines in the prakara.
