Kasi Viswanathar Temple, Kunniyur, Thiruvarur

Kasi Viswanathar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Kunniyur Village near Thirukkaravasal in Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu.  Presiding Deity is called as Kasi Viswanathar and Mother is called as Visalakshi. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns had a mention about this Temple. The Temple is considered as equivalent to Kasi. The place was called as Kundriyur in ancient times.

The Temple

Presiding Deity is called as Kasi Viswanathar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Mother is called as Visalakshi. She is housed in a separate shrine. There is a shrine for Lord Vishnu near the Temple entrance. The village was called as Arumozhi Theva Valanaatu Kundriyur as per the inscriptions available in the Temple.

Literary Mention

The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar and Sambandar had a mention about this Temple. The Temple is mentioned in 2^nd Thirumurai in 39^th Patikam in 1^st Song by Sambandar and 6^th Thirumurai in 70^th Patikam in 5^th Song by Appar.

கொங்கணங் குன்றியூர் குரக்குக் காவும்

நெடுங்களம் நன்னிலம் நெல்லிக் காவும்

நின்றியூர் நீடூர் நியம நல்லூர்

இடும்பா வனமெழுமூர் ஏழூர் தோழூர்

எறும்பியூர் ஏராரும் ஏம கூடங்

கடம்பை யிளங்கோயில் தன்னி லுள்ளுங்

கயிலாய நாதனையே காண லாமே
