Komaleeswarar Temple, Pudupet – The Temple
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram.
Dwajastambam, Balipeedam and Nandi can be found facing the sanctum and situated
immediately after the Rajagopuram. The temple complex consists of Sanctum,
Artha Mandapam and Maha Mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Komaleeswarar.
He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Lord is a Swayambhu Moorthy.
Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma and Durga are the nice idols
located around the sanctum walls.
Mother is called as Komalambigai
/ Komalavalli. She is housed in a separate shrine in the inner prakaram. There are shrines
for Sankatahara Chathurthi Vinayagar, Naalvar, Navagrahas and Nataraja
with Sivakami in the inner prakaram. There are shrines of Navagrahas, Bhairava
and Agastya Vinayaga in the outer prakaram. One of the specialty of this
temple is Pavai Vilakku (Lady holding the lamp made of brass).
The pillars of the Temple have the relief of cow
shedding milk on Shiva Linga, a king worshiping Komaleeswarar, etc. The ceiling
has the reliefs of crocodiles and Solar and Lunar eclipse by showing the snakes
swallowing the sun and moon. Sthala Vriksham is Maha Vilvam, a rare vilva
tree. A stone slab in the kitchen records a renovation done in 1818 by one
Kuppammal, wife of Triplicane-based Baba Sah, a cloth merchant of the
Saurashtra community.
