Legends
Garuda, celestial vehicle of Lord Vishnu was very proud of its strength as it was carrying Lord Vishnu. His arrogance grew as the days passed. Once, Lord Vishnu visited Kailasha, the abode of Lord Shiva along with Garuda. When Lord Vishnu reached Kailash, he got down from Garuda and left Garuda at the gates of Kailasha. Then he went into Kailasha and did not return back for a long time. Nandi, celestial vehicle of Lord Shiva, seeing the arrogance of Garuda, started inhaling and exhaling powerfully and made Garuda to move back and forth. Garuda got tired and finally wings got broken. Garuda pleaded to Lord Vishnu for help.
On seeing the condition of his vehicle, Lord Vishnu informed Lord Shiva about the harm caused to its vehicle by Nandi. Enraged Lord Shiva summoned Nandi and enquired about it. As Nandi did this without informing Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva instructed Nandi to visit Kanchipuram to have a bath in Sivaganga Theertham, then install a Shiva Linga and worship him. By worshipping, the sin of not obeying your master will get relieved. Nandi obliged to Shiva order. Pleased with Nandi penance, Lord Shiva called back Nandi to Kailasha and restored his position of being his vehicle.
