Kalhatti Falls, Ooty, Nilgiris
Kalhatti Falls is located in
Sholur near Ooty Town in Ooty Taluk of
Nilgiris District of Tamilnadu. The Falls is situated on the slopes of
Kalhatti Mountain. Kalhatti Falls cascades down from a height of 120+ feet and
is considered to be an ideal destination for trekking. The water fall is
located at around 2,000 metres above the sea level in the Sigur Plateau of
Tamil Nadu. The Kalhatty-Masinagudi slope is rich in wildlife such as
Panthers, Bisons, Wild Buffaloes, Wild Dogs, Spotted Deers, Sambars and
different types of hill birds.
Kalhatty also houses plantations
of various spices such as cinnamon, clove, pepper, nutmeg, rosemary, rosewood
and sandalwood amongst the many others. The falls offer best views during the
monsoon season. The falls is mostly dried up in winter & summer seasons. The
falls are accessible from main road through a private tea estate. There is a
viewpoint that offers a far view of the falls. One can walk down through a
narrow path for 15 minutes (one way) from viewpoint to take a closer view &
reach bottom of the falls. The path is usually isolated and not suggested to
take after 5 PM.
Connectivity
The falls is located at about 4 Kms from Bellikkal, 13 Kms from Ooty, 13
Kms from Ooty Bus Stand, 13 Kms from Ooty Railway Station, 32 Kms from Coonoor,
42 Kms from Kotagiri, 63 Kms from Mettupalayam Railway Station, 96 Kms from
Coimbatore and 108 Kms from Coimbatore Airport. To reach this Kalhatty falls,
Buses are available from Ooty to Kalhatti village on the 6th mile
of Sigur Ghat road and has to go by foot for the next 2 miles.
Nevertheless, the falls is connected by a Motorable road. This water fall
is situated on the Ooty-Mysore route. This is the road that connects Ooty with
Masinagudi and has the famous 36 hair pin bends. Ooty is well connected to Coimbatore, Kerala and
Karnataka.
