The Temple construction spans over a period of 500 years. Most of the inscriptions in this Temple belonged to 13th Century AD Pandyan King Maravarma Thirubhuvana Chakravarthy Kulasekara Thevan. This Shrine is situated amidst Poongundra Naadu, Kanaadu, kalvayil Naadu and Konadu. Villagers from these four regions worshipped Lord Shiva. Hence, the Lord came to be called as Naanatteesar.
