Bheemeswarar Temple, Koliyakudi, Thanjavur

Bheemeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Koliyakudi Village in Kumbakonam Taluk in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Bheemeswarar and Mother is called as Maragathavalli. The Temple is situated on the banks of T.R Pattinam River.

Legends

It is believed Bheema, one of the Pandavas, worshipped Lord Shiva here. Hence, Lord Shiva came to be called as Bheemeshwarar.

The Temple

This temple is facing towards east. The Temple follows Mada Kovil style architecture. The Temple was built on raised platform of about 6 feet high. Presiding Deity is called as Bheemeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Dakshinamoorthy and Durga can be found in the Koshta around the sanctum walls.

Mother is called as Maragathavalli. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Shrines and idols of Vinayaga, Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli & Deivanai, Lord Vishnu with his consorts Sridevi & Bhoodevi, Surya, Chandra, Chandikeswarar and Navagrahas can be found in the temple premises.

The Temple is located at about 3 Kms from Thippirajapuram, 4 Kms from Marudanallur, 4 Kms from Mathur, 4 Kms from Nachiyar Koil, 9 Kms from Kumbakonam Bus Stand, 9 Kms from Kumbakonam Railway Station, 10 Kms from Kumbakonam, 45 Kms from Thanjavur and 101 Kms from Trichy Airport. The temple is situated on Thippirajapuram to Mathur Route.
