Vaidyanathar Temple, Thoravalur, Cuddalore
Vaidyanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple
dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thoravalur Village near Virudhachalam Town in Virudhachalam Taluk in
Cuddalore District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Vaidyanathar and Mother is
called as Thaiyal Nayagi. The Temple is believed to be around 500 years old.
History
The Temple has one inscription belonging to Kondama
Nayakkar, a chieftain who ruled Gingee in 15th Century AD. This
Village was called as Thuravalur in this inscription. This inscription talks
about the gifts of lands to this Temple.
The Temple
This is an east facing temple.
The approach to this temple is through narrow street. Presiding Deity is called as Vaidyanathar and is facing east.
He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Dwarapalakas can be found at
the entrance of the sanctum. Nandi
and Balipeedam can be found facing the Lord. Sub shrine of Lord Murugan can be
found near the entrance of the sanctum. Vinayagar, Siddhi Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Annamalaiyar,
Brahma and Durga are the Koshta Idols located around the sanctum walls.
Mother is called as Thaiyal Nayagi She is housed in a
separate east facing shrine. Her shrine is situated to the left side of the
sanctum. Dwara Palakis can be found at the entrance of the shrine. Nandi and
Balipeedam can be found facing her shrine. Iccha Sakthi, Kriya Sakthi and Gnana Sakthi are the
Koshta Idols located around the walls of Mother shrine. There are shrines for
Bhairavar, Suryan and Navagrahas in the Temple premises. Inscription slab is
situated next to Suryan shrine.

Virudhachalam, 8.5 Kms from Virudhachalam Bus Stand, 9 Kms from Virudhachalam
Railway Station, 72 Kms from Cuddalore, 124 Kms from Trichy Airport, 223 Kms
from Chennai Airport and 244 Kms from Chennai. The Temple is situated on
Virudhachalam to Salem Route.
