Thiruvaleeswarar Temple, Nerumbur, Chengalpattu

Thiruvaleeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Nerumbur Village in Thirukazhukundram Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Thiruvaleeswarar and Mother is called as Thirupurasundari. This temple is situated on the southern banks of Palar River.


Legends

As per legend, it is believed that Chandran and Suryan worshipped Lord Shiva here.

History

This temple was probably built by the Cholas and later extensively renovated by Vijayanagara Kings. The temple contains inscriptions dating back to Rajaraja Chola I, Sambuvarayars and Vijayanagara Kings. The inscriptions talk about the grants and gifts to the temple.


The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with three tiered Rajagopuram on the southern side. Nandi and Balipeedam can be found facing the sanctum. The temple is in ruined state. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Ardha Mandapam and Maha Mandapam. Idols of Maha Ganapathy and three Nagas can be seen on a raised platform in Maha Mandapam. Idols of Lord Murugan and two Nagas can be seen on the left side of Maha Mandapam.

Idol of Kala Bhairavar can be seen opposite to Lord Murugan. The roof of Maha Mandapam has carvings of Solar and lunar eclipse. Vinayagar and Murugan can be seen on either side at the entrance of Ardha Mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Thiruvaleeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam.

Vinayaga and Durga are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. There is no vimana over the sanctum. Mother is called as Thirupurasundari. She is housed in a separate south facing Shrine. Her Shrine is situated in Maha Mandapam to the left side of the sanctum. She is in standing posture. She is four armed. Her upper hands hold Ankusa and Pasam and lower hands show Abhaya Varada Hastha.

Festivals

Panguni Uthiram, Pradoshams, Chithirai Pournami and Margazhi Pooja are the festivals celebrated here.

People pray here get relief from nerve disorders, fits and any deadly diseases.

The temple is located at about 1 Km from Nerumbur Bus Stop, 13 Kms from Thirukazhukundram, 14 Kms from Kalpakkam, 24 Kms from Mahabalipuram, 25 Kms from Chengalpattu, 27 Kms from Chengalpattu Junction Railway Station, 75 Kms from Chennai Airport and 81 Kms from Chennai. The temple is situated on Thirukazhukundram to Kalpakkam route. Buses 108 C & D ply in this route.
